Not impressed!

Looking for any information on how to bypass completely the the anti-slip TRAC feature. Not just the option shown below. Comparing our 2001 Tacoma to our 2017 the 01 gets around better in the snow and its probably due to all the computer overrides. We just want straight up 4X4 not all these other item.

When should I use the VSC Off button in my vehicle?
If both front wheels get stuck in fresh snow or mud, you may need to turn off both Traction Control (also know as TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) so you can rock the vehicle to free it.

To turn TRAC off, simply push and release the VSC OFF button. The "TRAC OFF" indicator light should come on. Push the button again to turn TRAC back on.

Push and hold the button for three seconds to turn off both TRAC and VSC. The TRAC OFF and VSC OFF indicators will appear.

Push the switch again to turn the systems back on. You can also turn the engine off and TRAC and VSC will come back on when you restart the engine.

You can't permanently turn that function off unless you want a lot of lights lit up.

 

I felt like my 03 was a lot better in the snow too. First gens were beasts.

That being said, I turn off TRAC and VSC when I want to “send it” it still gets the job done

 

Hold it down for about 3 seconds and it should turn everything or at least most of it off. Got to be still....i think

 

I was hoping someone knew a way to disable it without having to push the button all the time some override. We have done the temp override when needed, 4-wheeling just got all computer geeked up in these new trucks!

 

I agree I hate the traction control because I grew up and learned how to actually drive a car. I can say with all honesty that the trac control has put me in some unsafe conditions at time with cutting power

 

EXACTLY the issue we are having. The skill is there we can take the 01 to the same spot no concerns. Right now I have a $35k yard ornament!

 

Take a look at the new Ranger. It will automatically engage 4Hi if their version of CC / MTS is turned on. It is a strange new world.

That said, even the non-OR models can do some wheel in the air work with the TRAC system. I have used it well enough both on and off.

What happens if you've already hit that speed threshold and it kicks into 4Hi but then need to go slower than 4Hi will provide, say in a downhill descent? Does the Ranger stop on the incline and kick it back into 4Lo? Or are you stuck in an automated decent in 4Hi?

 

While I enjoyed hanging the back end out around corners in my 2nd gen I can appreciate that the 3rd gen is more safe/stable in snow.
I also remember the 2nd gen ABS made me miss my old 86 before it.

Onward and upwards. ps, put snow tires on if you want better winter driving.

 

I have no idea. I do know that my ex-boss's kid's Trailblazer with automatic actuating 4Hi burned out the actuator because of the all the unneeded switching that it did during the winter months. Their 2011 JGC was even worse.

In all honesty, I was very curious about the 'new' Ranger and thought about waiting for one. In the end, I needed something sooner with an MT. As time went on, pics and details emerged that reinforced my decision every step of the way. Then, I saw one going down the road about a week ago. The bed rails were at my eye level, about a foot higher than the Taco. Also, the roof looks visibly narrower than the Taco. Trail width is precious, but the Taco is comfortable as it is. Now, the pics of the real new Ranger have leaked. I have zero pull and will happily keep the Taco until the wheels fall off.

 

Look around you. That smartphone. Netflix. Online banking. Laptops and Ipads. Alexa. Smart homes. YOUR TRUCK.
These are all the things that changed since your 2001 Tacoma. To expect something to stay the same is unrealistic in today's world. Learn to drive the new one.

 

we just got a foot of snow

i had zero issues in my truck. put it in 4hi - hold tc button for about 3-4 seconds - only lights are vsc and tc off - then engage ect. felt completely confident and the system never intervened

 

They do great

 

The terrain is not a flat pasture with 1 foot of snow. They do not do great in steep snowed in logging roads with any of the computer features. Just because something changes doesn't mean its for the better. I simply want to do my own driving not a computer for me. As of now the 2017 had to be left at the bottom of the hill of a well traveled road as 4wheel drive isn't engaging at all. She will go in for warranty repairs tomorrow and more than likely find a new home. I don't have time to learn military launch sequence so I program my truck to handle the snow.

I'm not sure if it's still a thing on the 3rd Gen Tacoma, but on the 3rd Gen 4Runner (which has the same brake booster setup) you could permanently disable the traction control by unplugging one of the wire harnesses from the brake booster. I had to do it to get both rear wheels to spin while the truck was on a lift for diagnostic purposes.

Expect lights on the dash though.
