I wouldn't (and won't) go to 4.88 until 35s. Was wheeling with some of the guys from nitro a few weeks ago who didn't disagree.

Do y’all’s clutch pedal assemblies look like this? Not sure if they updated the design but I’m not finding the adjustment points like the service manual details. 2018 TRDOR
    641D1F1C-9DD8-4760-A8BD-022788B04CAF.jpg
There’s a locknut/adjustment in the middle of the pic but with the locknut backed off the adjustment nut doesn’t budge. I’d assume this is where the rod free play is usually adjusted but I’d like the engagement zone to not be so far away from the floor. Right now as soon as I depress the pedal I can get the clutch to slip.

With the lock nut loose turn the silver rod with your fingers.
Make sure you have 2-5mm free play.

Surprising how much that small adjustment makes!

    *RETARD ALERT*

The "locknut" is the silver nut at the bottom correct? Mine does not want to come loose. Right now that whole assembly (silver nut at bottom, larger nut and top piece) rotates prob more than 10mm. When I try to loosen the silver nut the whole thing spins till a certain point and when I put further pressure to loosen the nut it feels like i'm twisting the rod or putting pressure on it in a bad way. To remedy that I put another wench on the nut above the silver one to hold everything in place while i try to loosen and still no dice. Any ideas?

    Righty tighty, lefty loosey?
You may have jammed the rod in one of the nuts trying to loosen the silver nut without holding the black nut.
Hold black nut, 14mm and loosen the silver nut, 12mm.

Is there a way to directly measure free play with the push rod? The manual basically says it’s the “distance from pedal top to when resistance increases” subtracted from “distance from pedal top to when resistance starts”

I have some metric calipers. Can I just measure push rod length to determine my free play or do I really have to fuck with the pedal and measure from pedal to floor for each of those steps?

Don’t know if this has come up before - what’s the general thought on the clutch on the third gen? I’ve had it REEK of burnt clutch on several occasions now:

-Once downshifting to 2nd when coming to a spot from a highway. Probably too aggressively for a truck. Lesson learned.
-Another time shifting reverse to 1st while still lightly rolling
-This morning after the storm dumping over a foot of snow, getting going from my parking spot

Before anyone asks - I’ve driving manuals since I was 19, I’m 35 now. None of my previous clutches burned so easily. The way this clutch reacts to “light abuse” has me worried about longevity. I can’t imagine how it would be off-roading.

I find the clutch to be pretty good. I have been driving mine since December 2017. Only smoked the clutch once. It was starting up a steep hill in reverse, which is more a reflection on how high reverse is geared than there being a problem with the clutch.
I have a 4 cyl. I don’t know if the clutch in the 6 cyl is the same.

How many of the MTs have been trucks ?

I personally have not, even when wheeling in the mtns

Yeah. Could just be the learning curve of getting used to a truck clutch . No big deal. Keep your foot off the gas when up shifting these trucks. The rev hang only exaggerates things.

Coming from 10 wheelers, an F-150, Sonoma, and 2 tacomas , all the trucks drive different than the cars.

The rev hang is ridiculous! In my miata I had an ACT clutch and an aluminum flywheel, god I miss how that revved!

Smoked once starting up a sandy hill in 4hi.. will never do that again, the smell of accelerated clutch wear and $$$ to replace it at 150k vs 200k miles keeps me up at night.
