Bought my '18 DCSB TRD Sport in September '18 with pretty much this strategy.
Got it pretty much at invoice.
Later in the month you have more leverage. I think there's a "sticky" thread with pricing info you might want to look at.
Very happy with the deal and the truck.

With the new 2020 coming out as a refreshed version, I would wait until the end of this year and snag a leftover 2019.

You just described Andy V. At one of my old dealerships to a T.

But I tell you what. You did NOT want to miss a party he threw. Dude was a legend at our store. noone knew where he got his leads, not even the GM. But he sold like hell.

Most of us decided that he had ties to the Mob or a cartel or something :p.

You're right I gotta remember my experience is only in my specific market so I really shouldn't be speaking for the industry at large.

But I think anywhere you go the basic concept of "best time to buy" will always be variable if only because of inventory. I ended up running the internet department and my final call on price was more internal than where my competitors were, then again we were almost always where we needed to be anyways in regards to district ranking.

My BEST deal on ANY unit was always when I had multiples in stock, had good gross that week/month already, and one of the units was getting aged out.

For example if someone wanted a 7188 Tacoma in red but I only had ONE red one and it was a fresh unit, there's no way I would go as deep as on say a silver and one that I have 8 of (one of which was over 120 days in stock). Doesn't matter what day of the week or time of year it was someone is getting a screaming deal on a silver one! But by the end of the month I may only have 4 silver ones all <100 days and then the calculus is very different.

Since toyota doesn't have stair step programs like Nissan chasing volume is really only for allocation and bragging rights... so I find most toyota GM's are more motivated by flooring costs and days to turn instead of outright volume for the sake of volume. But I only did this in Socal might be very different in other regions :notsure:

Could be, every GM has their own philosophy and strategies. Our GM was close friends with Malones GM. And malones GM at the time was our store owners nephew.(or cousin)
So there may have been some competitive motivation over gross at the end of the day :p

Edit: you seem to me, to have spent some time behind the desk at some point. The focus on inventory to me says desk manager.:notsure:

I mean yeah I based my closing on availability/inventory to retain profit. But I didnt really worry much about how many we had in stock that much when it really comes down to it.
A desk man however, he definitely would keep that in mind more. Which is why you seem like you have experience in that area.

Add up the out the door cost
    Truck + Doc fees

Each dealership has different doc fees that vary in range. They dont usually disclose that until you are ready to sign. Ask ahead of time

Look at different borrowing options, rates could vary

Consider trucks far away. If you found a great deal in the middle of nowhere you could probably get it shipped to you for $1k-$1500

    Good luck

@Jaque8 i would definitely agree with you on prices based on stock in hand and days in inventory. I shopped 6 dealerships in OC and IE and none could/would give me the price I got in Phoenix including the cost of flight and gas back to socal. To me, it was a great deal.

Because you cannot see the paint finish very good, like dings, dents and mismatched panels. Also you will not get a true feel of the vehicle and rain typically lubricates things so listening for rattles is hard to hear. I wanna see the vehicle dry.

New cars get scratches, dings and dents too. Hell sometimes areas get painted too. You really limit your ability to truly see, feel and get a feel of the vehicle, but I guess you see how it handles in the rain.
