regular bed vs stepside bed

are the stepside beds the same size as the regular xtracab beds?

i know the doublecab beds are smaller so i don't need that confirmed

The width of a step side should be about the width between the wheel wells on a regular bed. You will be loosing about 6-7 inches on each side.

 

oh uhmm....what's the regular width between then?

would i still be able to fit a full 4' sheet of plywood etc int he back? ( i don't car if it's a little longer over the tailgate, it's the width i'm worried about)

 

it would be close my bed is a lil over 5 feet s if u were to lose a foot or so all together on a stepside then i would say yes a 4 ft. peice should fit into the bed but it will probably be a lil tight!

 

I have some doubt it will fit. Sheets of plywood usually only fit between the wheel wells on a full size truck, where as on a smaller truck you would have to put the sheet above the wheel wells. The sheets only contact points will be the top of the ww, and it will not lie flat in the bed. Since you are loosing that space above the wheel wells in a step side, chances are the only way you can put the sheet in would be on an angle. But I could be wrong.

 

I just did some measurements on my 2nd gen, and it's box is not even 5ft wide. The space between the wheels wells is also less than 4ft, so you could not fit a sheet between them. With the 1st gen being smaller than the 2nd gen, I don't see any chance of a sheet of plywood sitting flat between the wheels.

 

Well im going to take your word for it because i didnt actually have a way to measure it lol i was doing it by my wrist to elbow haha(my tape measure is in our fishing boat for rock fish measurements!!!) but i have had a sheet of MDF in mine just on top of the wheel wells, maybe it was a lil shy on the sides!

That's the exact info he was looking for it seems, a 4ft wide sheet will fit in a regular bed on top of the wheel wells, but since that space does not exist in a step side, the sheet won't fit unless its on an angle with one side on the bed rail.

 

The distance between the wheel wells in a 1st gen is ~42" so a 4x8 sheet of plywood will not go between the wheel wells in any 1st gen bed. In a regular bed (not stepside) you can carry a limited number of 4x8 sheets but it will be above the wheel wells.

it's not a big deal and hauling playwood etc isn't the purpose for the truck....just wanted to know if it was possible (flat)

I found a good deal on a stepside a few month ago but passed it up because it's just too narrow for me. i think it's something like 9 inches narrower then then normal one, and the normal one is already pretty narrow. plus its not like our trucks are very high or the beds are very deep. I can reach right over and grab about anything in the truck. maybe the stepside would be helpful if you lift the truck and/or you're a short guy
