ABS, Brake! & Traction Control lights on

Ok got out there this morning with the multimeter set to V with the straight line and truck running. It read 13.25. Im guessing that means the harness to the sensor is good. Ill order a new speed sensor and cancel the harness order and hope.for the best. I just hope it isnt the tone ring/bearing causing the problem..

 

I just read 13.24 on both of those pins with the truck running, is that too high or indicative of a problem?

Thank you. Fingers crossed it's the sensor. I really don't want to take this drum apart again. Would cleaning the sensor ring with qtips while spinning the hub do anything?

 

Yep, sounds like you should be fine. The FSM says 7.5-12v but I think it's mostly reasonable battery voltage. Did you check the other side also to see if you get the same.

 

You can see the tone ring through the sensor port.

 

Unfortunately i didnt have time to this morning. Im also a little hesitant to pull the other side since the clip broke on this side while trying to remove it. Ill give it a shot this afternoon

 

Yeah, when i pull the sensor the end was covered in grease, probably from when i had the leaking axle seal. Could the bad reading be coming from a gooped up tone ring?

New sensor unfortunately didnt fix the problem. Still pulling a 39 code, indicating foreign object attached to tip of rear LH sensor. Not sure what to make of this. I am noticing the new sensor isnt sitting perfectly flush after it is installed, not sure what could be causing that either.

 

I also tried using brake cleaner to spray out inside the sensor hole to clean the tone ring.. no luck. Still pulling a 39 code, and only a 39 code. Also re-tried old sensor. Still 39 code. Could it be the harness? Could it somehow be the tone ring? Man, this is a super frustrating problem. Anyone else experience something like this? I also read 13 volts with both multimeter pins in the harness that connects to the sensor..

 

Another update.. after re-cleaning the tone ring through the sensor hole, i reinstalled the old sensor. Cleared the alarms and now the lights stay off! However now the ABS motor seems to keep coming on.. you know when you hear that little whirrr sound when you start up? I keep eharing that almost every time i hit the brakes, and it feels like the ABS is trying to engage even though im not slipping. No codes thrown after driving about a half mile.. any input would be appreciated!

 

If the sensor isn't sitting flush it isn't in the correct position to the tone wheel, that could be your "foreign object". Too much of a gap and it can't read correctly. You want grease in the axle housing. spraying brake cleaner in there was probably not a good idea, and may wear out the bearing and seals faster.

 

Ugh, well cleaning things out seemed to ultimately get the lights to not come on, but now ABS seems to be trying ti engage at low speeds.. is there a way i could reintroduce grease in there after giving it a qtip cleaning? Im hoping there is a bit of debris on the tone ring causing faulty readings. Also to note the last time i re-pulled the old sensor to check it, it was covered in a lot of debris, as if a bunch of stuff was knocked loose and accumulated on it on my brief drive down the block. It is at least heartening the the lights arent coming back on..

Also, thank you for responding im really floundering here. This has nothing to do with VSC right? A VSC reset wouldnt help anything?

 

Hey all, well after driving about a mile, the lights came back on, this time throwing a 34 code. RR sensor malfunction. Removed sensor and now it appears worn/rubbed (?!?!).. it wasnt like that earlier when i cleaned it off! Well, got the tire off and got a look into the sensor hole.. is it normal to see 2 rings, one spinning and one not? Should i only see the tone ring through the sensor hole? Im wondering if we missed a spacer or something when reinstalling the axle. Truck drives fine otherwise, no grinding or anything weird. We will take everything apart again in a few weeks to see whats up. Luckily i just got a job with a vehicle so this is no longer a daily driver.. thanks for all hanging with me on this!

Yeah i think we are just gonna pull everything apart and get a shop to press a new bearing and be done with the whole thing.

 

Both my rear bearings were toast and I had to bite the bullet and have them done. Good luck!

 

Does anyone know the part number for a 3rd gen rear sensor harness? my p/s got grinded during some lower shock mount install. The only ones ive found so far are for those without a diff lock.

Wonder what scanner i should get to scan thing light normal codes, abs, airbag,etc. without breaking the bank. But gives me a good idea what to start chasing.

my frame was replaces by Dealership last year and I was told these sensors came on after the job. Not sure why it wasn't addressed soon after.
