Hey guys, I just wanted to hit you guys up and get your thoughts on my situation as you guys are the experts.

So I was rear-ended and I just a call from the offending drivers insurance saying my truck was totaled. I called the auto body place where I had dropped it off to see what the tipping point was for my truck and he said it was the frame that was damaged and would require "A lot of pull time" to get it fixed.. I asked him if it was safe to drive and he kinda didn't give me a straight answer but said he wouldn't recommend buying it back from insurance (I don't know what that price will be yet). As far as the rest of the damage my tailgate was smashed in pretty good and the rear window of my canopy was smashed but other than that I feel like it drove fine before I took it in to get the quote, nothing out of the ordinary.

So I just want to get your feel for the situation, hear similar stories or get advice.

    Thanks ahead of time.

I just recently lost my 06 to the same situation. Frame was bent pretty bad and damage to the body was all the way to the back of the cab. My insurance totaled it out and the buy back was about 5.5k. Went with the amount they offered me as a complete loss which was more than fair. In the end I now own a 11 trd 4x4 with less miles than my 06 and in better condition.

Oh man that sucks, I definitely feel for you. The only thing is the body damage that I can tell is only on the bed where the hinges for the tailgate are and the tailgate itself. The body panels look fine. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you get back from insurance? I guess I am trying to look for a ball park so I can know what to expect. I am probably hoping for more than I might get haha. But I should mention that I just payed it off in the hopes of eventually buying a house soon, so I am trying to avoid having a payment again.

Ouch lol I guess the guy said I could at least get all my accessories off before anything. I guess my winch, bumper, roof rack, stereo system, canopy, off road lights and my wheels I can get back. luckily I kept all of the stock parts.... Its a shame it doesn't have a rusty frame

Have you been told you can take all that back and it does not impact your evaluation for the total?

The truck is yours now so you can take back anything you want but they can deduct it from your total value in some cases. So just ask the specific question if that isn’t clearified.

He said that it was not included in the price of the vehicle, I guess if I have to leave a few things behind that is what it is. Now here is a really dumb question haha but what if I see what the insurance company would pay up to to have it fixed and pay the difference?

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I ended up with with nearly the exact same truck, except it is a 5 speed, has TRD wheels/BFG KO2 tires and 10K less miles.Wrecked '14 Tacoma.jpg

    They will not do that.

They will give you a pay out for the vehicle and you will have to buy it back and then you will be responsible for taking it to shops to fix it.

That's what I felt like! I didn't even consider frame damage. I figured a new window, tailgate and a few hits with a hammer to bend the hinges back and I would be a going in no time.

    Time for a second opinion.

Sometimes people lie because they want something they don't have. Maybe the auto body shop wants your truck...?

If there is frame damage take the money and run. Grab your parts if you can.

They are never the same. Even if it seems “fine” now, little things will crop up In the future: body mount issues, driveline issues, tweaked alignments, all things that can’t be noticed now will likely result in failures and frustration down the line.

I don't know, it seems like it is a reputable place. I think its a chain, although I am sure that doesn't mean anything. I kinda want to go see the frame for myself, although I doubt I would be able to see if it was bent or tweeked myself...

At this point, I want to find out how much the buy back is. if its maybe 1 or 2 grand I might really consider buying it back.. I guess it all depends on how the money works out.
