Fuel Octane...what are you using?

What fuel octanes are you running in your Gen 3 V6? I've never been a big fan of buying higher octane fuels or vehicles that require them. I've been putting 87 octane in my new 19 that has presently 3,400 miles on it. I haven't been very pleased with the MPG or the way it idels so I just higher octane gas in it which I think was 94. The difference between low and high octane where I live is presently over 40 cents per gallon. I can already tell it's running slightly better. My question is the juice worth the squeeze? At over 40 cents higher per gallon I'm not at all happy with this situation. Will 87 hurt the truck? What are you running in yours? Thanks

I have a second gen but when I put 87 I get about 250 miles between fill ups and when I spring for 92 I get over 300 miles between full ups.

You can always experiment on different brands, different octane levels, and if you can find ethanol free. It won't hurt anything and you can see what works best in your truck.

Here we go again... proven over and over, upgrading octane when the manufacturer doesn’t call for it is a complete waste of money, 2.1B in 2015 alone :fistbump:

This...octane is only an anti-knock rating, not an indication of energy content

There is nothing wrong with experimenting with different fuels to see if anything feels different, some guys on here have issues with misfires that go away with higher octane.

Didn’t say there was anything wrong with experimenting... just informing those that do are wasting their money, and it’s their’s to waste (that’s ok). It’s my belief one should follow manufacturer guidelines (they’re the engineering experts), so using regular 86/87 octane TopTier fuel is exactly what Toyota recommends, and thus what I put into my $40K truck.

BTW, I use TopTier premium fuel for the wife’s Mercedes because that is what MB engineers state is required for that high performance engine, simple.

Unless you have something weird going on with your engine higher octane is more likely to cause misfires, not fix them. Most of the time its doing nothing. Rarely the additives in premium fuel could clean something in the fuel system, but youd be better off throwing in a bottle of lucas.

If you actually do the math and get better mpg on a higher octane over multiple tanks I would get your car checked.

I also get better mileage with higher octane in mine. Especially if it's non-ethanol. The manual says 87 or higher. It isn't limited to 87 only. Not sure if the higher octane improves mileage due to something with the Atkinson cycle or what but it does. I've experimented with this on both of my third gens. The higher cost for the fuel does pretty much negate the higher MPG's though. I'm running 89 in my current tank and I did a 16 mile trip to inspect a property the other day and I got 30 MPG average on that trip according to the computer. Have to have just the right touch on the accelerator.

I'll amend my previous statement and say from what I've read if you get ethanol blend 87, then higher octane may improve performance and mpg, but thats the lack of ethanol, not the higher octane. I never get ethanol in socal so I never thought about it.

More important is ethanol content and winter gas.

Is there more ethanol in winter gas?

Ive been using 91 shell ever since i bought it. No ethanol. 3000 miles now. Runs great, no hesitation or missing that some guys are complaining about. Also get good mpgs with the manual. Surprisingly Goes pretty fast too.

When i got my truck from dealer it was filled up with 87. It ran fine. I filled it with 91 and felt a little smoother to me. Maybe its just all in my head. I noticed all japanese cars i had ran a bit better with 91 or higher. I have a work truck so i fill up my taco maybe once every 2-3 weeks. If it was my dd i would prolly just use 87, much cheaper.
