Glad that you are ok - I see everyone's real life reports on surviving very significant accidents, and just shows how safe and protective this vehicle is to all its occupants.

I think it would be a bad idea to rebuild the truck from its current state, simply because of those safety systems. Then there will be pinched cables and harnesses. The level of effort and cost is probably on same level as trying to completely repair a flooded vehicle.

 

Yeah looks better in black for sure! If you need it, or just like it, good enough. I get into Philly occasionally and Harrisburg regularly, so it might come in handy there also.

I'm still waiting on the call. I really have no idea what they're going to give me as a first offer at this point. But what I do know is that it's going to cost me a bunch of money to replace what I've lost, regardless of what they offer me -- my truck was getting up there in mileage, but it was a good one and so I had confidence that it would likely continue working. Buying someone else's 100,000+ mile used truck isn't a sure thing.

Importing a ~$26K 2015 OR from the US will probably end up costing me close to $40K once all of the fees are paid, dollars exchanged, maybe a flight down to pick it up. I have a TRD Pro locally, MT, listed at $55K...

It’s a bummer that is how you’d have to go for a truck with MT and locker. Bigger bummer that it’s right before the 2020 comes out.

I doubt there would have been any difference in your outcome, but I do suggest the ARB Bull Bar (even when a lot of people think it's ugly). As far as I know it's the only bumper that's been tested to not effect the truck's air bag deployment and crumple zones. This was the major reason I ultimately decided to go that route. Safety First!

One truck I was looking at would require me to pay 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax, and then there's probably another $1K in fees and Canadian inspection and daytime running light conversion, then I would have to get myself down to the truck, or have it shipped. The Canadian dollar is low right now. It adds up.

Would you have to pay state sales tax since you would never be registering it there? I would have assumed you’d pay the costs at the registration juncture for importing it.

I’d say just buy new but that’s me. I’d be sick buying a 19 with all the upgrades coming for 2020, but that’s life.

 

The dealer in MA says they're obliged to charge sales tax, regardless of the fact that I won't be registering. I'll then have to pay tax in Canada and Ontario.

I'll look into the 2020... power seats! lol...

Talk to the finance specialist there. I find that very hard to believe considering you don’t pay state sales tax if you aren’t registering it in the state you buy it in, but instead where you register it. The finance guys generally accommodate that at point of sale, but they’re also idiots. Could be wrong, but only half (since they’re still idiots that basically function as someone to up sell shit you don’t need /TylerDurden).

 

I could be wrong, obviously, but I'm not sure you can avoid registering the vehicle when purchased. And if the dealership can't register it directly as a Canadian vehicle, that might be the reason. They'd have to register it SOMEWHERE.

 

OP: if you expand your search to non-OR vehicles you may have more luck finding one with a MT; from there you can add an ARB locker.

Good luck whichever way you end up going! I know that I'd be pretty upset if I had to find another one to replace mine. Even if I wanted to go with a 3rd Gen I'd be stuck with a Sport as it's the only one that you can get with both MT and longbed.

 

It really also depends on the area and how wanted that vehicle/option is in that area. Here in the PNW, 4x4s are usually higher value in the winter time because of the unpredictable weather. They're still somewhat in that range during the summer but the sales are crazy good during that time.

 

I just totaled my 2017 3 weeks ago. It completely smashed in the front. I ran into a Mitsubishi Eclipse and his bumper was just lifted, that’s all! I now have a 2015 and I’m VERY pleased with the switch.

 

I just dealt with this today. They can’t have you pay the tax if you don’t live in the state. The dealership actually sent me a check to pay off part and I paid the remainder.

I think a 2015 DCMT OR from the US, import to Canada, is what I'll end up doing. Not sure yet. 3rd gen interior is still tempting me.

 

(1) Strip off the stuff you added, you can keep it or sell it.
(2) Hire your own insurance adjuster to help you get a fair deal with the insurance settlement.
(3) Prepare to wait out the insurance company for a fair deal. They will low-ball you since most people need the money immediately and will settle for 20% or more below fair value compensation. My son waited out the company when his car was totaled, took about a month (rent a car), threatened a lawsuit and ultimately got thousands more.
(4) Either buy used or get an inexpensive car for a year and wait until 2020 for the new Tacomas to come out then sell the car.

 

Latest line of research:

-buy a TRD Sport locally for less than an imported TRD Off Road
-install ARB locker in rear... maybe front?

But, I think that a-trac would sure be useful at times. I drive in remote places in snow a lot.
