So my truck recently started cranking a little more than it should in order to start. I have the stock battery and have had it since fall of 2016 when I got my truck. I want to replace it with a really good battery. I have heard the odyssey batteries are pretty good. Also, should I go for the dual battery setup? Would anybody recommend this set up?

If you want the best, it is largely considered to be NorthStar. Best deal is to buy online and pick it up in store from Batteries Plus, offering 10-20% off with their coupon code.

Odyssey is a good brand too though. The amount of power and reserve is up quite a bit using an AGM battery. Unless you had very specific needs for a dual battery setup, the increased power capacity from something like the NorthStar should be plenty for most uses.

this is the battery I have. its been awesome. zero complaints here. huge upgrade from the stock battery.

I went with one larger battery (27F) instead of dual batteries. I'm usually on the move every day instead of in one spot for days at a time.

OKOK, so a northstar 27F would be a little bigger and work quite well is what Im understanding.

    You don’t need dual batteries.

AGM is the way to go for one single fact.

Most AGM batteries like odyssey can be discharged to 80% up to 400 times.

It’s not advised to do this even once with a standard lead acid battery.

More CCA and reserve capacity is a plus.

I know I dont "NEED" them but hey why not...price ofcourse, but other than that why not. Anyways, AGM is the way to go then? Ill consider the Odyssey and the NS.

Damn, near $400 for a battery oof. Will that 27F battery drop right into our trucks or do we need an adapter?

the x2 power battery from batteries plus is made my northstar for batteries plus. the 27F is what came stock in the second gens with tow package, you can easily put it into a third gen. I can run a fridge off mine for 24+ hours with no issues.

you can get a battery tray from a second gen (its just a piece of plastic that sits under the battery) or you can just set it on top of the one from the third gen and it will overhang a bit. either way is fine.

I went with the X2 Battery (Northstar Branded for Batteries Plus) and stuck with stock 24F group size. What an improvement. We had 0 degree weather here in Colorado and the truck just fires right up with zero hesitation and a bunch of gusto! I no longer worry about the battery leaving me stranded.

$325 with the coupon, plus tax. Occasionally they have 20% off.

As others mentioned, the 27F is what came on 2nd Gens TRD/tow package trucks. Non-tow package trucks got the 24F. Not sure if all 3rd Gens are running type 24F, but should be an easy upgrade to 27F as mentioned above with the battery tray.

You'd know if you needed a dual battery setup. The fact that you are asking makes me believe you're good with one battery.

I'll probably go with the northstar in a year since it seems much over 2 is iffy with the stock battery and I hate being stranded.

Any knowledge on how the north star batteries will handle vibrations ?
I usually see the “prerunner” guys use optima yellow or red tops. I’m suspecting my batter will go bad sometime this summer.
The north star 27F seems interesting though.

Edit: I see they say 28x better for vibrations, but still any comparison to an optimal or real world use with heavy off-roading?

Vibration resistance is due to being an AGM battery vs lead acid. Both North Star and Optima are AGM batteries. Optima used to be made in the USA but years ago started cost cutting and moved production to Mexico. Many people have reported the Mexican batteries as not as good. But to compare 27F batteries:

    Optima yellow top
    15x more vibration resistant
    CA: 1025A
    CCA: 830A
    RC: 140 min
    Charge/Discharge cycles: 300
    Warranty: 3yrs
    Made in Mexico
    Price: Approx $300

    NorthStar
    28x more vibration resistant
    CA: 1750
    CCA: 930A
    RC: 195 min
    Charge/Discharge cycles: 900
    Warranty: 5yrs
    Made in the USA
Price: Approx $350 (before available coupons)

The better battery seems pretty clear.

99% of car batteries are made by the same companies, Exide, Johnson Controls etc.

    Personally, I like East Penn.

    Good Luck

Lots of pics on line of caved in our swelled agm batteries. The charge profile is completely different for agm and flooded cell lead acid. I come from the boating world. Marinas have burnt up tons of agm batteries by not changing the onboard chargers. Check all the new chargers they habe ways to change the profiles to agm. Has anyone checked what the output voltage of Tacoma alternator versus agm spec? Don't know that it's an issue. But it was huge I the marine industry.
