I used to run jet fuel in mine but got tired of waiting in line at the air port.

Do you fill the tank or wait till the pump clicks off?

My truck is happier and more efficient with 89. The better fuel economy using 89 offsets the extra $/gal.

Trucks have no emotions. It can't feel better. So $6 more a tank full saves you money? That's a lot of miles. So your getting like 23+ MPG?

I fill it until it stops, I don't force or "top it off" after it stops automatically.

Been running 85 octane here in Denver since day one. 17,000 miles and not one issue with “knocking” or “misfiring” that others are complaining about.

I use 86 octane cause that’s what is the standard around here. Everyone thinks they are getting something out of higher octane fuel because the gas companies were smart by calling it “premium”. The only thing premium about it is the cost.

As was already pointed out, if your engine was not designed to run on higher octane, feeding it to your engine does absolutely nothing except help lighten your wallet quicker.

On the other hand, engines designed for higher octane fuel, like my Indian Springfield motorcycle for instance, will suffer with the standard stuff. Luckily my Taco is perfectly happy to drink down 86 octane. Runs just fine on it cause that’s what it was designed to do.

You're right. I was mixing up my info. So much for going from memory.

It does say on page 581 of my manual to use 87 or higher though. My truck runs rough on any 87 octane, and i'm not alone, there are numerous complaints of the same thing. Maybe there is something wrong with my truck, I have mentioned it to the dealer and I am told all is normal. The manual also says to contact your dealer if driveability problems persist, so...

    What can you do?

These 3.5 Engines have quite high compression, if I remember correctly it was around 11.8.

Ok so what you are saying it's never the same twice and there is still room for a good two more gallons.

Well not quite it is an Atkinson cycle engine and has every thing to do with intake valve timing. It is a lengthily concept look it up.

Here's my experience. When I bought my truck I ran nothing by 87 and the dealer said they are tuned for 87 it is fine to run that. I got about 19-20 MPGs. 6 months later I lifted my truck 3 inches and put 33s on it. My MPGs dropped to 14-16. I bought the Orange Virus Tune and tuned it to 93 specs. I've since ran 3 tanks of 93 thru the truck and I have a lot more torgue (from the tune not necessarily the higher octane fuel) and my MPGs are back to 19-20. I used to spend about $40-45 filling up with 87 and now with 93 it costs me about $50-53. Worth it IMO

Why? You're right. Topping off the tank is what leads to issues with the canister filter and no way you are getting 2 more gallons in anyways.
Outside of some small variations of volume due to temperature differences, as long as you follow the same procedure everytime you fill up, the difference is negligible. The volume differences would affect topping off or stopping when it clicks like you are supposed to do anyways.
