Thinking about buying ditch lights but here in California apparently it’s illegal to even have them on unless you have covers on them which is pretty lame what do you guys think also amber or just playing white pods if I do decide to get em

Only you will know if you need them or not, and if you don't 'need' them if you want the look on your truck.

It depends on what you do with your truck. For example, I go to dispersed camp sites that are 6+ hours away from home. I normally have to look for sites to camp at after dark. Initially I had a light bar (cheap Cali raised one) which gave me enough light but it was all aimed forward and I could see any drops or 'ditches'. Opted for ditch pods with side shooters and my visibility increased a lot. The rigid covers fit on the Cali raised side shooters btw.

Great if you deal with wooded areas and wildlife. Saved me from 2 deer just this month

I have a set of ditch lights living in SoCal. Never had any issue from CHP about them even though where I work and encounter CHP often. I have them offset aiming over the fenders to fill in the dark void on the side-front of the vehicle. I would say that one of the el cheapo 2x2 led ditch light pods have slightly lower output of light than an OEM headlight so you're not going to get ample amounts of fill or throw with forward facing ditch lights. I recommend getting a decent 20" bar mounted in the lower valence or behind the front grill. Thay will give plenty of front throw and fill for 80% of general night use (camping, driving a dark forest road, etc) and have ditch lights aimed off to the side. I have 2 -12" round led lights mounted on the front ARB bumper. Classic look and tons of power.

The laws regarding them being covered isn’t strictly a CA law. There are other states with similar laws and, if you go for a state inspection and they aren’t covered or removed you can fail (VA).

Just buy the covers and leave them on until you actually need to use the lights.

Shit, I had them on since being here since July 2018 and not one issue with LEO’s and, I have VA plates in CA.

Having them is a world of difference when you are driving on a trail at night. Luckily my buddy who took lead had some when we went out, I am actually in the market for some as well as soon as I figure out what my goal setup is.
