using my analogy an RTT is not a 5 star hotel. it's more like a 3 star.

wives/girlfriends don't stay in 1 star motels and they don't stay in ground tents.

wives/girlfriends will stay in RTTs and will stay in 3 star hotels.

also, I know it was a joke.

    they don't really, though.

You can wait for REI to have their big annual sale. You'll be able to get Tepui tent for 20% off and if you have dividends it helps even more. Also free shipping to store.

I realize that a quality RTT isn't gonna be cheap by any means. I was looking at Tepui & Free Spirit mostly but likely won't be camping in any extreme conditions as the Mrs. would like to be "glamping" as much as possible and we'd also be taking the pup along with us too. So mainly just looking at the lower end options and if anyone has any major complaints about not getting a higher tier model.

My thinking is exactly how @stronghammer says. Even if I only use a tent a couple dozen times vs hotel costs it's paid for itself.

I think that is more than a decent price range for a RTT setup. Glad you were able to upgrade pretty smoothly

Sanded and prepped for the bedliner coating. Had the awning brackets put on so that they can have matching coating. Delays getting coated last week because we had so much rain and it was too humid to spray. I should have it mounted by end of week.

Sanded to coat all of the flat surfaces and avoid the latches, hinges, and mount rails.

These have since been drilled and mounted before the coating.

Just stumbled across this thread. was wondering if those who have the RTT on a frontrunner bed rack have any pics. Tried to use the search function but didn’t see any. Currently have the Cali raised overland bed rack with gofsr high country. Wanted to switch out to frontrunner bed rack (not the bars) to match the roof rack. Thanks in advance

To each their own. It definitely felt risky and had butt pucker moments when you wire thousands of dollars as a group to China, but it paid huge dividends. I think it was around $600 shipped for the equivalent of a Mt. Shasta or Kukenam (sp?) with the annex. So, around a $1300 savings. I would call that a pretty great deal. But you are certainly correct, it was a nightmare for the amazing member that organized it and took care of everything.

OP asked it to be locked so people would stop asking if he was going to do it again. He left a very detailed post as to how to organize it and do it yourself with another group of guys. I have the invoice, it was not $770 - right at $600 shipped to LA, where I picked it up. And good luck finding that tent for $900-1000 brand new. This was before these things were popular - there wasn't a used market to look at. it was a $2000 tent when you added the annex, even 5 years ago. There was some form of warranty protection, but I honestly forget. The lead time was no different than any bumper or other armor you buy. Again, different strokes and what not. I offered this to someone asking for a reasonably priced RTT - well, that was about as reasonable as the price could be. But that was then, this is now. Sounds like the used market is comparable, less headache, no warranty, but you can see what you're buying.

Sneak peaks of the color batched bedliner on the Alu-Cab. I pick up and install the tent tomorrow so the coating has a full dry day to cure.

Masked off all hardware and rail systems so there won't be any tolerance issues when mounting accessories and using the tent.

Alu-Cab Gen 3 tent put on this morning and tested out. Awning gets installed on Sunday but the brackets for it are already installed on the driver's side and coated. So glad I did the color match instead of going with black powdercoat. The grey tent fabric even matches my truck interior color.

Ladder attaches either on the side or on the bracket I added to the passenger side rail. When the awning is open, I'll use the ladder on the side instead of the rear.

Load rails ready to install on the top of the tent later today for hauling my kayak, bikes, gear, etc.

What's going on everyone. I'm heading out to Anza Borrego to shoot some wildflower photography with the wife. I was wondering if the community knew of any sweet primitive camping sites that doesn't take too much off-roading skills to get to and has some shade in the process for during the day? We have a roof top tent if that's of any help. Thanks!

There are quite a few spots to "primitive camp" and then there are infinite spots to camp "dispersed" style- you just have to follow the laws and pack out everything (including human waste) and they are sticklers for the campfires too.
