That would mean dealerships really care about you after they make the sale = I don't see it happening Billy... Sadly.

I do not believe ECUs can just be swapped as they must be programmed to that VIN and can not simply be wiped and "blank".
Also it does screw over the tech who has to do the work twice while only being paid bullshit warrenty time once and hoping toyota corp doesnt catch on. I have certainly pulled some not essential parts out of used vehicle sales has to get a car out that day, but unless I am being paid extra by someone im not doing it on more difficult parts to access, anything that takes over an extra 30 minutes of my life away im not doing for free.

Question The dealer wanted both key fobs and tailgate keys. Does the tech have to program the new computer from scratch or will it come with my VIN number already to be plugged in? The shop foreman acted like it took a while to do all this (if they ever get the computer).

I believe they do. Memory has been wiped clean if they removed the main ecu.

I know for Ford we do need two keys/keyfobs to program a new PCM, I have never done one but based on other modules(computers) I've replaced I would imagine the actual programming after its installed would take a hour or so at most.
At Ford we get a blank module with no VIN specific info programmed in, it just has to be the right one for that engine/trans. Can't use the 3.5L PCM in a 2.7L truck.

My 2017 DCSB OR was also infected with ecu virus where all communications from the ecu to the body refused. Dealer held my truck for 2 months due to ecu shortage. During the wait technicians had to test each wires for continuity. I was to the point of getting rid of it but I decided not to and I'm enjoying the ride so far.

When all this happen to your truck did you get warning lights about other items ,such as traction control or trans.fluid high temp.? The dealer said the computer would be here soon and then they would know if I REALLY do have other problems. I'm afraid I have more problems than just a computer. THANKS for your post.

Lol they don’t get infected with viruses. I mean not saying someone couldn’t screw around with the coding somehow and make them do all types of crazy stuff. Also if they are testing for continuity, then they didn’t actuakky know what the issue was, or the ECU/BCM or whatever module is having issues; they don’t know what cause the problem. A shorted wire can fry a module. It could be a communication issue, broken or pinched wire, poor connection or a failure within the electrical components on the board internally. Lots of different possibilities.

Op has a 2019. A computer from the same setup on a 2018 could be different. Because it’s “new” so to speak the availability of having one in the warehouse is limited. All it take is one difference between a model year to make one from a previous model not work. Sometimes if they are on backorder long enough they will actually authorize to pull one out of the assembly line. Some dealers might be willing to pull one off another truck. But even if it’s possible to reprogram to your truck (some manufacturers it’s not) they usually will still need to pull the numbers directly off the component, meaning ripping it out of the truck and seeing if the numbers are the same. Not sure exactly if this is how it works in a Toyota but some fords and other brands it does matter. There is more than just a part number on the labels.

The immobilizer codes are stored and programmed into the ECU so if they are replacing it that’s why they will need your keys. They have to be relearned

I bought a new Corvette many years ago (1989). Brand new ZF 6 speed tranny let go after 600 miles. It had a, new to GM, cast aluminum housing and the factory was over torquing the drain plugs causing a small crack that propagated over time (a short time!) with hot/ cold cycling and eventually caused a leak. It was an issue that affected a large percentage of the early production 6 speeds. Well, I fought with Chevy over a month to get a new tranny but all of the units that were in inventory were allocated to new production, none were available for warranty replacement. After going back and forth with dealer multiple times over a two week period, and with my car sitting the whole time on their lot, I finally faxed a letter to the President of GM at the time and copied the zone manager. A district VP got involved but he would only commit to a rebuilt tranny and it would probably be a another few weeks to a month before one was available (remember this was a fairly wide spread problem and I think there were many new owners in the same boat). I was dead set against a rebuild (I was afraid they were TIG welding the cracked casing) and told them they could just buy back the car, including excise tax, which they did - totally crazy but just goes to show production is king and the existing customer can go pound sand. May be things have changed since, but I doubt it.

When I said virus it was an expression. You sounded like my service guy when I asked what was the cause of the failed communication. To this day that's the same answer I get. Lol

GREAT NEWS.. THE TACOMA IS ALIVE AND WELL. TEST DROVE IT AND EVERYTHING SEEMS TO WORK AS ADVERTISED. BTW the computer cost was $1400.00 , of course the warranty picked that cost up. The dealer was super nice bout everything. none of this was any fault of the dealer at all..They loaned me a new truck and tried everything to get the computer faster. I'll give the Tacoma another try. If it's good ,I'll brag ,if its bad ,you already know what happens then. Happy motoring
