I think you’re talking the 1 gallon/ 5 lb tank. Tradesman could make the tool box in any dimensions you needed. Based on a quick measure it looks like it would have to be just slightly deeper than mine to fit. Basic dimensions of tank in the bracket is 8”x8”x12.5”

Could you point me to where you read about the A.R.E DCU (or other aluminum caps) cracking? I have one on order and have yet to hear or read anything about that issue due to bed flex. The dealer assured me they're pretty solid caps, but he was also trying to sell me on one.

I am having a hard time tracking down the other source I had read about the DCU cracking under off road conditions, but here is one:
    https://www.cheaprvliving.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=15254&pid=165219#pid165219

Of course its all anecdotal web forum evidence. And after looking some more since you asked i have found other posts with people saying that their fiberglass shell cracked to hell. Or that their ARE DCU has held up great with offroading. :notsure:

I am going to take it with a bigger grain of salt now. And as is usually the case, the people with problems with x usually overshadow those that have had great service with it so don't feel the need or care to post its praises online. There's too many variables, from getting a lemon, to not knowing how hard people actually are on their stuff.

Thanks for sharing those links. Like you said, there are too many variables to account for. The forest service, blm, and police trucks are typically outfitted with DCUs up here in Oregon. It's not an end-all-be-all but it must speak to the quality even a little bit, I think. Worst case is I end up reinforcing the joints if cracks to start to develop.

There's no doubt that the quality of the Tradesman caps in this thread are impeccable but I think I'll be pretty happy with the ARE. And they offer a 3 year warranty.

Now I'll stop derailing the thread. Back to Tradesman talk. All the caps in here look awesome!

I believe CHP uses Tradesman caps for their trucks.

Those are very popular in Mtn areas, especially with Firemen and Mtn workers. Not cheap but solid....

I had an ARE like the Tradesman and it was Solid and I put it thru its paces in many back roads in Baja. The only bummer was that the Clearcoat doesn't last long on Custom paint matched Toppers. Mine wasn't a one off either as my neighbor got one after me and I have seen others. ARE didn't do anything about it....

I had the interior insulation added since I slept in it. I also got Paddles.

Anyone on here just get a carpet lined, and still able to sleep inside the camper? I really don't want to spend the $700 for insulation. but if its worth it I will do it.

Yea, we got the carpet liner but didn't go for the insulation/interior skin. We've slept in it multiple times this winter in Tahoe, down to about 20F. It's chilly, but it's going to be chilly no matter what at that temp :)

I just can't justify the $700... I don't mind being cold. Have you done any summer camping yet?

We only had the shell installed in October, so haven't done any summer camping. A few nights in the fall, but that's about it.

I hear it can get hot inside the camper, just trying to see if the carpet will be enough. I will probably order it without the insulation. I can probably do the insulation my self, but just can't make it look pretty lol

One to think about if its not lined with something rather than raw. The condensation can cause water drips and that equals Chinease Toture treatment if sleeping inside

I would still get the carpet, just no interior skin or insulation. I definitely don’t want water dripping on my face.

What are you using for sleeping pads? That looks like a killer bed setup!

His build thread has the link for the item but it hasn't been available on Slamazon for a while.
