It seems strange to me that this truck configuration exists. What would someone buy a Off-Road labeled truck with 2 wheel drive for? I assume there will be a real reason.

Someone thats really really tight on money and can’t afford the extra 3 or 4K to get the 4x4 version. But still like the looks of it plus it still has a rear locker for what it’s worth.

I agree though. I thought I read somewhere where some guy bought one and didn’t realize it wasn’t a 4x4 he assumed the “off road” label ment it had 4x4.

Maybe someone wants a trophy truck, they can mod it without having to worry about a t-case and front diff

I would assume the majority of people that buy them wish they had bought a 4wd. I guess they work for some people but there really is no point in buying a 2wd OR Tacoma

if I lived south of the border where it never snows and there's sand dunes to troll around in I would buy a 2wd Tacoma.

Seems like a 4x4 SR would be a better and cheaper option.

Having a rear locker helps you get your boat up and down the boat ramp. Lots of people down south don’t use 4x4 ever. Heck when I lived in Florida I used 4x4 only once in 5 years. And it was questionable whether or not I needed it on while at the beach.

To not have all the front driveline and weight. Off road racers are mostly locked 2WD. This gives many a desert pre-runner without the price and baggage of 4WD.

I still can't figure why there is a Sport TRD??? No traction additions but the same cost for a fake hood scoop???

this may be the closest but I have to admit I had a pre-runner and got stuck on a boat ramp once and the beach once. That did it for me and 2wd. It was embarrassing since the beach people assumed I had 4x4 and just didn't know how to get unstuck. Beach patrol with a rusty Tacoma, but 4x4 had to pull me out. Now I have the 4x4 and of course have yet to use it. go figure...…..

I remember asking the sales guy why the 2012 TRD OR was cheaper (by a couple thousand) than the 2011 TRD OR that I was going to purchase. He walked back and forth across the lot a couple times, and finally went in to ask someone else cause he didn't understand it either. He came back and let me know that one was 2wd. Neither of us knew a 2wd OR existed, lol. And to be fair, he was brand new. Wouldn't have doubted if it was his first job, ever.
