I actually know this from first hand experience hahaha and I’ve fit more in a 4runner then my tacomas ever could due to the back being bigger then 5’ with the seats down. if this was my 06 I’d stab it in there and make it fit but being my 19 my wife won’t let me use it as a truck yet.... I’ll look it up if it fits it ships lol

If it fits it ships. A guide to fitting 20’ of material in a 5’ bed. 21D7401F-F6BF-4F3C-9A92-162584B16D96.jpg

However I did opt for shipping to my house for recent roll cage material purchase due to quantity. Didn’t want to make too many trips like this.

Yeah but you got it easy, your rear window slides down and you have roof rails as options.

Yeah but it’s only a half rack as useful as your 5’ bed lol and rear window down would be noisey as hell on that drive doing 75+

Let me know. No worries if not - I totally understand not wanting to put it inside your brand new truck.

I am confused about RTT's. no disrespect to those who own them. I would think sleeping that high off the ground would be a challenge, especially in the wind or having to get up in the middle of the night. Carrying the extra weight, no bed space. Cost. I would think a trailer would be a better option?

That is a good question and I am sure guys with them will chime in with their own reasons. For me it is about convince, trailers can't go everywhere and create a whole new set of challenges. Risk Vs Benefits has to be seriously weighed. Being off the ground offers a lever of security from wildlife. It is easy to park, pop roof, sleep, wake, close roof, drive away.

I think the roof verses trailer is depended on your needs and type of travels. You only spend the night in one spot and usually move on early the next day? RTT. You hit tight technical trails that a trailer won't hit? RTT. You setup camp for a day or two to enjoy and explore local area? Trailer. Carry way more stuff than can fit in the bed of your truck? Trailer.

Which one earns you more expo points at the local mall? Depends on the mall, know which territory you are rolling into, those trailer guys can get a little wild and without their trailer, its like camouflage. You wont know you are in trailer town until it is too late.

I can attest to this...having a trailer can be a hassle for the fact that it has to make it on trail as well. Keep in mind that hauling a trailer over obstacles can hinder your approach to where you are having to pick different lines just due to approach cause of what you are hauling. I think for the guy who may not wheel anything technical can be successful with a trailer or build your rig to have advantages for when you have a trailer. I used to have my RTT at my cab height to save on MPG and I never felt that top heavy with it although I will be honest I havnt flexed my stuff to the point where I felt horribly awkward.

TBH, I cant really fathom where having a trailer would benefit for me on trail cause I would not want to be hindered and I also like to drive fast as it is. The RTT gets my vote everyday and the cool thing is you can retain your mall points without having to find two spaces.

RTT’s are pretty cool. I’ve had 2 so far but ultimately I got rid of both. My reasoning was that having your truck tied down in camp or having to close your tent to go wheel around was a bummer. Not only that, but they take a beating if you like to drive hard. My last RTT literally fell apart on a trail. I would always think about it up there and it kept me from driving freely.

I’m just going to be doing a ground tent for now, but like everyone is saying it ultimately comes down to personal preference. They are cool and there is definitely a place for them depending on how you camp/wheel. For me, I like to set up a base camp and cruise from there. I would like to build a small teardrop at some point. I like that because I can just keep all my camp gear in there. When it’s time to go, hook up and hit the store for food on your way out and your done. But having a tundra, it will pull a trailer a lot happier so that’s part of the reasoning for me wanting this set up without worry.

Rtts are a bitch to close, I will say that. If I did another rtt it would have to be a hard shell for ease of setup and tear down.

I see the positives and negatives for both. Heck even with my bed tent I am already thinking about what a PITA it will be next weekend. If I want to go explore the area I have to take it down etc. Thankfully unlike an RTT set up this is a cheap experiment that only cost me $200 including a air mattress. I may end up just going to a large 4-6 person base camp style tent down the road. We'll see how next weekend goes.

For me the positives of an RTT do not outweigh the negatives + the costs to get one

I cant knock this...I have my current RTT just chillin in my garage as I dont have a new bed cage to mount it on. Since I have been bumming a ground tent lately, man its getting harder and harder to justify an RTT considering how minimal I can be with a ground tent and a nice mattress. Im thinking of buying a 2-4 inch foam mattress in a twin size so I can just pack that in the back. Depending on how things go I might end up selling my RTT in the long run with it being off the ride for so long.

You going to hawaii or what?

We ground tent. I've debated a RTT in the past, but it just doesn't make any sense for us. There's five of us, and we aren't small people, it would have to be a ginormous RTT on a not ginormous truck. Plus the truck is my DD, so I'd be lugging all that weight around every day, or I'd have to be mounting/unmounting the tent all the time. Sounds too much like work. We have a good 10-man tent we throw in the back with all the rest of the camping gear. Sets up in 20 minutes with me and one of the kids. We all have quality sleeping pads. It's all good.
