Been to the dealer... Everything is normal. I'm not alone on this, just lucky I guess. Runs fine on 93, so it gets 93 from Costco like 99% of the time.

I average 20’s and high as 23.1 if I baby it. Mostly highway but 40 of my 110 miles per day (rd trip) are in single land suburbs with stop lights, traffic and trains!! I usually crank it down the ramps to get on the highway hitting 80mph to merge with traffic. I cruise 75-90mph on the highway home.

Here’s today a few miles from work when I left Dunkin’ Donuts and hit 90mph on the way home.2309599D-0572-4885-9610-A09EC560219B.jpgMy friend at work bought a 2019 off-road and gets 14.3-15.5mpg. It must be all the heavy duty parts and extra weight.

I tell him it’s my front chin strap/air damn below the front bumper. Lol

    The skewp adds 4mpg217BD4F5-B5F9-4A82-9F24-2A3DCEBFC60E.jpg
I save receipts and write the miles on it and check the math. Pretty consistent low 20’s

    DAMMIT I am ruined!

I tried this today in the tank and it still won't start

Anyhow, SERIOUSLY I would love to know your opinions. The only way to determine MPG is to do it pen and paper and do it consistently! PERIOD DOT.

I started doing this in my 2005.5 Jetta TDI and have all the records. I was kind of pissed that I couldn't get the same MPG that the computer was tossing out. So I purchased a VAG COMM to make it show the CORRECT readings! Haven't found a way to to this with the Taco but the MPG/RANGE is not (from what I have found)....entirely accurate.

Just fill up the exact same way and do it every time.....do it for a few fillups and see what you get.

Then simply write it down, I know it is hard for folks to do that but do it, and then see how different "gas" works.

If you get a better result from a few tanks then go with it! If not, try something different.

BTW...PLS do not put "Grandma's" in your tank.........My 2019 with "Grandma's" and @Mrtacoman88 "crappy olive oil" has destroyed my engine.......

    Just a joke ;)

I drive at 85-90 mph with hills stock and getting about 18.9 mpg...and that is conservative on our 2019. NO MODS.

My truck would get negative MPG's in this scenario.

These threads are always worth a chuckle. Modern ECUs will modify timing based on when it detects knock. Higher octane delays knock which allows advanced timing which equals moar power, usually. Is what it is. What's more of a question is how much the ECU will advance the timing and if that advance is worth the coinage to you. Either way there's no doubt the engine is running different on different octanes regardless of what you feel or think.

Yup and Negative MPG is a good thing! It just shows you push it.

    I can comment later.

We only have 2.5k miles on ours but it works for us...hell my wife's old Jeep Liberty averaged 18 MPG (2002) and it was no way near as fun as this truck is.

Congrats on the new truck. I like mine, warts and all. I'm at 35k miles and it seems mostly sorted out finally. Except for being a classy bitch and liking the finer fuels in life.

You can in Oregon you just have to get out of the big cities. I do it on the east side when bow hunting/shooting/etc.

I do a run from Colorado Springs to Denver EVERY day to the airport.

My MPG to Denver is AWESOME!

My run home SUCKS! (I have to gain over 2k feet in elevation)

The screen shots of what "someone got" for MPG is irrelevant.

    1. Depends on the drive .... uphill/downhill
    2. Depends on the DRIVER and ATTITUDE while driving!
    3. Not sure, yet, how the silly display shows MPG.

THE ONLY way to tell is pen / paper......that's it.

I'm out on this subject....because it depends on driver style, terrain, alt, tires, mods...etc....

So MY suggestion for folks that think their MPG sucks.....just take a baseline for YOU and YOUR truck and see if different things make a difference. NO one on this forum OR any other can say your MPG is "AWESOME" or " SUCKS"......

There are SOOOOOOOOOOOO many variables that make "MPG" differ between each and every driver.

    Just my 2.5 cents.....

    Bottom line:

Establish a baseline for YOUR TACO!

See what works for you and test things out.

If you get better MPG GREAT!!!

If you don't then adjust or deal with it.

Our Trucks are not a "PRIUS"...they are not a "DIESEL"....so accept what you have and figure out if there is an issue.

99% of people's engines here won't detect knock on 87. If it doesn't detect knock on 87, it's not gonna detect knock on 91, and timing won't change. If your engine is knocking, you need to fix your engine, not put a higher octane in.

Nah everyone's engine is detecting knock on 87 and every other octane too. That's precisely how the ECU knows how to set the timing. Here's an article about active ignition timing which is common in modern engines. The ECU is constantly adjusting the timing trying to get it as close to knocking as it can because that's where it runs optimally.

    http://www.ecutek.com.au/ecu-tuning/37-general2/57-active-ignition-timing

Now to be fair, I don't know how active the ignition timing in Tacoma's is. It's reasonable to assume it can accommodate readily available octanes but the exact extent to which it'll advance timing for various octanes is not common knowledge.

You can trust the engineers all you want but we all know they didnt create the perfect truck. Now if you actually put in higher octane, instead of relying on things you find on the net, you can notice a subtle change in the way it runs. Im not knocking you, but dont think you’re answer is the end all. Ovtune with 91 And 93 octane rocks....even tested to show higher performamce from higher octanes

The aftermarket tune is designed (and adjusted) for each specific octane level. The stock tune is only designed for 87. Of course the AF tune is going to produce different than stock results, but it’s due to the tune in concert with the designated grade of fuel (that’s why there are different tunes for each octane level). Toyota could of flashed a high performance tune requiring a premium grade of fuel, however they didn’t for several reasons. Many people are going to have various experiences in the stock Taco, and are going to swear by their perception and beliefs (and we all know that for the lack of facts, perception is reality)... I’m standing by the science.

87 minimum. Not 87 only. It's equipped to handle 89, 91 and 93 as well along with every other modern car.

Of course... this debate is always never ending. I hereby strike the word “only” -lol

believers are going to believe what they want based on personal biases (perception is more powerful than fact to many)... again, I choose to stand by the science, simply my choice.

My truck pings a bit on 87 (CA, bloody ethanol). I’ve been using 91 for a couple years now.
