Pardon the ignorance, but how do you know when something like that fails is there oil in the water or what happens?

The way they’re designed, if the head gasket fails, coolant will seep into the cylinder causing rough starts, misfire check engine light. You will also notice that sweet coolant smell out of the exhaust in the morning also.

OP, I've posted this before elsewhere on this site but for those who like information the production dates for your truck with the 1GR-FE where the old design head gaskets were used verses the new design are:

09/2004 - 10/2005 old design head gaskets used
11/2005 - the new gaskets were used hereon until the end of production for the 2nd Gen Tacoma with the 1GR-FE

Just going by the small sample size of the current poll results on this thread, I have a much better chance of throwing a dart at my kid's trampoline 30 ft away and have it ricochet off the trampoline, bounce off the chimney, then roll down the roof, bounce off my kid's soccer ball and lastly pierce through my left testicle.

Well I don't know if anything ever happened to mine before I got it but runs like a top now no rough starts or that sweet smell you speak of. Not saying it won't happen or hasn't already happened, but my truck says December 04 so I guess time will tell until then I will keep driving it and adding more stuff to it to make it a better everyday truck. And then when something happens I will rebuild it bigger and better

Mine failed around 220k miles, maybe more. Poured Blue Devil in it and haven't had a problem since. That was over two years ago. I have a spare engine if it gets to be that big a deal.

I barely noticed it, but I was losing coolant slowly.

I bet there's more than one person on here with a HG leak that doesn't know it. Mine wasn't bad. Just enough to make me wonder why my coolant was low every couple months. I keep an eye on it now and haven't seen it drop. In all fairness its not my daily driver anymore either but it got plenty of miles after the Blue Devil

2005 here. 118k miles. IF it does happen, I will get it repaired. No sense in having to get rid of a great truck over a gasket. But some people are quick to spend money on upgrading to a face-lifted 2nd gen or even a 3rd gen that will cost far more than any repair ever will on my 05.

154,000 on my 05, no issues yet. I wanna supercharge it... not sure if I should plan a gasket change prior, or just run it and hope for the best?
