Realistically you could tow this with a tiny sedan, will it be quick? No. But easily done and you’d be surprised. However I would highly recommend against using the bumper ball, spend the 150$ and get a proper hitch and this will be done no problem. I’m after towing many cars through hills without breaking a sweat.

So I've seen in the local classifieds people occasionally selling an OEM chrome bumper with hitch receiver. Is this a good DIY option (my current bumper is not pretty, I'm guessing because PO used it for towing something too heavy) that I can bolt on myself, or do I need a professional install? I figure the wiring I can do myself, there's already a 4 pin harness there.

To me thats over doing it with just the base 5 lug. That trailer will push around the truck quite a bit, and your suspension really won't like it. I guess if you are just towing it around town that's fine, but i wouldn't really try to take it on the highway. I tow a 3500lb boat with my 2.7, but i have bigger leaf springs, brake controller, tranny cooler, and only go 30 miles to the lake and back. If you're dead set on it, as mentioned above get a class 3 or 4 hitch and a probably a flipped 2 or 3" drop hitch receiver as the truck will be to low. You should be able to install it yourself just fine, it bolts into the same place as the factory bumper and sits beneath it. Also absolutely need a brake controller wired in to stop that thing as well.

The truck won’t be pushed around by it, I’ve towed heavier and it feels solid. You can’t tow something and expect to not feel it. And op no don’t buy a bumper the receiver is a separate piece you can get at say a uhaul. I wouldn’t even tow 1000lbs with an f250 on a bumper ball, don’t feel safe to me personally. A good test is to simply ask the guy if you can do a test tow, then see how you feel. I can’t see him saying flat out no

Basically if you’re planning on taking it on the highway at 60mph don’t buy it, around town a wrx could likely even tow it. The only time you’d need a 6cyl or even bigger is if you hitting the 5000lb point and you plan on hitting the highway. You also need to know how to brake properly I.e pretend you’re driving a loader with awful brakes and start slowing down super early

Towed a 16' Bayliner boat with the '98 Tacoma 4x4 I used to own. No problem, even when backing it up our inclined driveway. Now I have a 2.4 regular cab (no 4x4) and am installing a hitch this weekend. Probably will only tow a small utility type trailer at first and see how it does.

    I second this!

All 50 states require a trailer brake controller for anything being towed over 1500lbs. This will require a 7 pin plug which I am assuming the trailer has.

I didn't know that anything over 1500 requires a brake controller. That is great information to have. Based on everything I have read here, I think I'll skip towing this with my 5 lug.
Thanks for all the advice, everyone. Time to go look at that T4R V8.

Also having a long wheel base vehicle will make towing much less taxing with a trailer with that much surface area. i.e DCLB

 A good choice for sure. Especially if you're doing it for work and doing it often, itll be a far better experience with a more appropriate tow vehicle

In Virginia brakes are only required for trailers over 3000 lbs.

    § 46.2-1070. Brakes on trailers.
Every semitrailer, trailer, or separate vehicle attached by a drawbar, chain, or coupling to a towing vehicle other than a farm tractor or a vehicle not required to obtain a registration certificate and having an actual gross weight of 3,000 pounds or more, shall be equipped with brakes controlled or operated by the driver of the towing vehicle, which shall conform to the specifications set forth in § 46.2-1067 and shall be of a type approved by the Superintendent. Farm trailers used exclusively for hauling raw agricultural produce from farm to farm or farm to packing shed or processing plant within the normal growing area of the packing shed or processing plant and trailers or semitrailers drawn by a properly licensed motor vehicle but exempt from registration, shall be exempt from the requirements of this section.

"Gross weight" for the purpose of this section includes weight of the vehicle and the load upon such semitrailer, trailer, or separate vehicle.

Here in NL we dont require brakes until 9923lbs or dual axle trails are in use. Just looked it up out of curiousity and im a bit mind blown lol

I think most single axles can only hold 3500lbs so basically its a 3500lbs limit i guess? our laws are known to be a bit hand wavey lol

My trailer has a 3500 lb limit. I have no brakes on mine, but I give myself lots of room between me and other vehicles.

Wrong. Not all 50 states. Example, Illinois, trailer brakes required over 3000#. 2999# gross trailer weight and under are not required.
