Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S Review

So I want to follow up now that I have had these wheels for over a week, which has included receiving over a foot of snow and lots of ice here in MN. Ice, well is ice but with the snow, these tires give me complete confidence. They have no problem with traction and keeping control of the truck while on the road. I really appreciate this as I drive roughly 120 miles most days and that's mostly driving single lane hwy roads through farm fields. I think they are a great mix of beefy, some aggression yet a nice road tire. Very impressed overall

 

Stuck between the XLT version of these and S/T Maxx. Y’all in Canada obviously have worse weather than me.. so I think it’s safe to assume they’ll do fine in the winter here.

 

I put a set of the XLT on my 4Runner. They are a really quite tire. Haven’t done anything off road yet but they are good in the rain.

 

My duratracs are stiff, loud, and miserable on fuel economy. I’ll at least be eliminating one of those things by switching.

 

They are ok on icy roads for sure not as good as actual winter tires.

 

Nothing beats a winter tire, but I don’t have two sets of wheels. I’d *love* to have a set of 17” 6-lug rock warriors and run ATs and winters.

I just replaced the original BFG Rugged Trails with a set of stock size (265-70-16) Cooper AT3 4S - this thread and all of the input in the replies helped me make the decision to go with these. It was definitely time - I got 52000 miles out of the BFG's, and generally have no complaints about those tires. They wore evenly (rotated each year at inspection) and handled fine in most conditions. But recently as the tread had worn down to the indicators, they were starting to get bad in wet/snow/ice. This morning on the way to replace them I was sliding all over the icy roads. Definitely time!

These new Coopers look great and ride very nice - no road noise at all. I'll need to play with the pressures as they were installed over inflated I think. Looking forward to some snow this weekend to test them in! I thought I'd post a few pictures since I went with the white letters and haven't seen too many pics with them mounted that way.

 

Looking forward to your feedback. I’ve got family in Bucks that I’ve told to get these tires. Let’s see if I’m right haha

 

What did they run you installed?

 

With all taxes and fees etc. $741.55. Basically $162/tire plus ~$100 for mounting and taxes.

Just got them today so I'll post my feedback once I have a few miles on them. Tomorrow morning looks like a wintry mix in our area so I'll get some slippery roads to try them out on!

 

Thats a good price. Where did you get them installed?

I'm down to 2/32 and need to make a purchase soon.

 

Bergey's Tire, they have a few locations in the Doylestown PA area. My local Toyota dealer was slightly higher price but not by too much. Can't remember the exact quote, maybe $25 more per tire.

 

One thing I have noticed which isn’t uncommon is that the tires will be stiffer (and thus you’ll want to lower pressures) for a little bit but with a bit of use they will soften up and you’ll find yourself airing them back up. I took mine down to 30-32 or so when I first got them and they felt just right. Now with about 18k on them, 34 cold is just right so be aware of the break in.

That said in the first 10k they wore to 11/32nds and have worn zero measurably since. Great tires

 

chiming in again. tons of rain in socal the past few months. still haven't broke traction. empty bed. so far these are great. still haven't taken these offroad yet

 

Following this thread, I'm about 6 months away from needing to replace my Destination ATs. The Cooper, Destination AT and General Grabber are on my short list.

 

Good to know! I dropped them to 32 psi and the truck rides so much better.

I'll post my impressions after about a week and 2 snow storms: what an upgrade these are over the original tires! I've had them on the highway up to 75mph or so (very quiet). This past weekend I encountered both slushy/icy roads as well as deeper snow covered roads Sunday night before the plows were out. In both cases the traction and stability were impressive. I feel very confident in any conditions with these tires!

 

I have not read all the posts so my apologies if already answered. I currently have the previous Cooper AT3's in P-metric 265-75r-16's. Had struggled with getting the tires balanced especially when new. I also notice that when the temp. gets down into the forties and after the truck sits over night it feels as though the tires have flat spotted. Similar to old bias ply tires. Once the tires warm up they get better. Cold tire pressures are 33-35psi. The condition is worse the longer truck sits in the lower temps. Any body else have similar experience with previous or latest versions?

 

Can’t speak for the prior versions but I’ve had none of these issues with the 4Ss. They balanced well... some some weight but I have had no balance issues since mounted, rotate them every 5k. No oddities with flat spotting in the cold that I’ve noticed

 

Just hit 20k on these tires, still wearing evenly, between 10 and 11/32 (the last 10k there has been virtually no measurable wear). Still very happy
