Rear view camera - where to mount

Anyone installed a rear camera on their Tacoma??
Before I order, I'm trying to figure out where to install it.
Reason you may ask.......because "if" my 17 year old daughter drives my beloved Yota to run an errand, etc., I want to make sure she doesn't back up into something or someone.
She scares the crap out of me in a parking lot.

I've thought about installing a dash cam for insurance purposes.

Getting the camera farther from the ground would help give you a better view. There *is* room on each side of the tailgate handle to mount a camera, but that leaves it really vulnerable to damage. Running a wire to it would be pretty difficult as well.


I think the only practical location is use a license plant bracket to mount it just below tailgate. No drilling needed and it's reversible.

 

Yeah, I'm with you on the insurance or liability issues. Especially when some jackass is riding your bumper.

 

Dude, I hate to say it but a camera isn't going to help her park perfectly. There's more to backing up than just staring at a small TV screen.

I have backup cams on 2 of my vehicles, and use the camera maybe 20% of the time. The rest of it is looking out the windows and knowing your corners.

 

I understand what you're saying and it's preached each time that "you need to have your head on a swivel". This is just another tool!

 

I just did this mod to my new 1st gen. I purchased a pop a lock and modified it by removing the lock and mounting a camera to replace it (2nd gen camera look) my cams connected to an aftermarket deck though. I'll try and take pics later

 

I recently installed a PopLock and it literally broke the first time I used it. Hopefully not using the lock will help to keep yours from breaking.

 

Yes, please post some pics, and Thank you for the response. I purchased a JVC Bluetooth receiver less than 2 years ago and didn't want to spend close to $200 on a receiver that has the video connection.

 

I had my friend at his stereo shop do the install on a deck I won at a tournament along with the camera. Could've use the license plate cam but wanted a closer look at the angle towards the bumper while reversing. I don't plan on having a camper or cover on this truck so deleting the lock isn't a biggie to me. It's not perfect but I'm happy with the results. I hope this helps

 

Anyone have a write-up where the camera is a combo backup cam (displays on screen when in reverse) AND always recording to disk (dash cam concept)?

 

Mind sharing what brand/model camera and how you installed it in the pop a lock?

 

I used the license plate screws, mounted the screen to a CD slot mount.
Amazon about $29 for he camera/screen/wiring kit, $12 for the CD slot mount. I mainly did mine for backing up to a trailer.
