No hit on my card yet for pronghorn or elk. Guess it probably wasn't meant to be this year

Alright guys... I did my taxes yesterday, and there's gonna be a hunting gear spending spree. I need a better rangefinder. I need one that can read out far enough, in the field, so that I can actually use my 30-06 to it's full capability. I've shot 3/4 moa groups with it at 400 yards so in my mind that makes it a 800-1000 yard rifle for elk or bear. I'm not sure I'd actually take a shot at those ranges but I'd like to have the option, and it's not an option unless I can accurately range the animal. I'm tossing around vortex, Leopold and Sig. Anybody who has experience with any of these brands, I'd appreciate any insights you have. Do they range to their advertised yardages? Has anybody done a side be side comparison of any or all of these brands? Whatever you got, I'd like to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance...

I just got the Nikon Black 4K Range finder. I think the advertised range is always in optimal conditions with a reflective target. That being said, it is advertised to range 4,000 yds. I have not ranged anything close to that, but I have ranged cactus and such out to 1,500 which is more than enough for me. I’m in Tucson and would be willing to let you take it out and test it in the desert if you want. I think it’s usually $450. I got it on sale for under $400.

Wow! Yea, 1500 yards would be all I would need. I appreciate the offer to let me take it out and test it. That would be great. I'll pm you after work

I’ve got a vortex impact rangefinder, advertised to 850 yards. That’s all I really need which is why I picked that one up for me wanted to take all shots sub 400 yards.

I go vortex for their warranty, and the discounts they offer to people selling their products

I'll throw one more out there.
Sig kilo 2200lrh. Love it - scan feature is nice. Goes out to 3000 plus.
But small enough to bow hunt with.

Also what I've learned with these range finders is you can gauge your hike and walk time .Say you are glassing and find a critter at 2000 yards. You can range the animal , base of the hill and calculate how far and approximate distance and time to get over there. Terrain plays a factor, but long distance range finders serve a dual purpose in the terrain I hunt .

My big purchase this year was Swarovski STS-65-HD spotting scope. Important to enjoy each and every hunt .

Also have a free tripod for glassing .

Thanks for the rangefinder reviews guys! Much appreciated. It sounds like either the sig2200 or the Nikon black would do great for me. I'd really like to be able to range over a thousand. I'll check out the features and see which direction I want to go.

I agree with @AZBACKCOUNTRY , it's not just ranging for shots, but glassing and ranging an animal at long distance and then being able to range potential shooting positions that may be within shooting range and pick a place to stalk to for a shot.

My current one is a Bushnell that is supposed to do 1000 but it's only reliable within 300 yards. 480 is the best I've gotten out of it but that was off a tripod and that takes too long. I do really like that it has a ballistic programmer so you can enter your caliber, FPS and zero'd yardage and it will tell you how many inches high or low to hold based on distance and angle, but I just need more distance out of it. Thanks again guys.

@AZwildcatTOML @Rhino8541 I'll get with you guys if I decide Id like to try before I buy but I trust you guys so I'll probably just pick one based on features .the prices look pretty close so that's not really a factor.

@snowboard704 I like vortex optics alot. In the past year I've picked up a pair of 12×50 viper hd binos and a 20-60× Diamondback spotting scope and both impressed the hell out of me. And the lifetime warranty is another big selling point. That's why they're on the list for rangefinders. Thanks for your input.

Alright my fellow backcountry grocery shoppers, I got drawn for a rifle cow elk tag in gmu 23, Dec. 6-12.

I've been wanting to see the Sierra Ancha for years so I put in there and was lucky enough to get drawn. Only two problems... I've never been there and i've never hunted elk so I'm a bit over my head on this one. If anybody has experience in unit 23, could you at least point me to the right side of the mountain range to start looking? Or what elevation elk may be at during that time of year? Or are they like deer and they're everywhere and could be anywhere?
