Breaking it down is also the only way to guarantee that it ISN'T the seals

    ......or is the seals

Will it be obvious a seal is damaged?

Ive got the turbines separated from the housing. The compressor wheel wont slide off. I tried a little heat without and luck. I didnt put much effort into that since even once I do have it apart I dont have a replacement kit yet. There was a pool of oil in the hot side housing.

Ran into an issue with one of the nuts holding the downpipe flange on. It decided it didnt want to let go of the stud so fortunately the whole stud decided to come with it instead of breaking.

I hope I only have to assemble this one last time. The way the manifold was designed makes it a huge PITA to get to the turbo flange bolts. 1/6th of a turn at a time....

If it was over pressured, you might see a flattened part of an oring, or a tear. I would have waited til you had the rebuild kit in hand before breaking it down. I should have said that, sorry lol

No worries, I honestly hadn't planned on it just one thing started leading to another and figure I was that far already.

All compressor turbines just slide onto the shaft right? Its a Garrett turbo.

Yeah the compressor should slide off the shaft. If it has not been removed before, you might need a press to press it off the shaft

Does your turbo require a restrictor?

How would I find that info? From what I've read/watched that's kind of the last resort. Ideally I should somehow improve the flow out of the drain. I did find that I never pulled the old gasket off the drain flange. You can see in the picture that the gasket has a smaller hole than the housing does. I'm sure that was restricting things a bit. Not sure if it would be enough to back things up or not.

Everything looks like it's in good shape on the inside. Some very very fine indication of metal build up. The bearings look good and I can't feel any damage to the shaft.

From what I'm seeing this split ring is really all that seals anything on the exhaust side.

Is this slightly bent vane going to be OK to run? It's about 2mm from the rest.

looks like a journal bearing, those usually dont need restrictors. the bent vane is alright, might be a tiny out of balance but id run it. i cant remember on the hot side seal.

they are indeed journal bearings. Just did some reading and like you said journal bearings dont typically need restrictors. Im really hoping it was just the old gasket causing too much restriction.

I've got a journal bearing turbo... your inlet fitting should be something like an an3 or an4 size but the outlet should be much bigger, an10 or something similar. I just went through this

I run a .04" restricter on my journal bearing turbo. My motor just pushes a lot of oil and I don't boost that high (under 15psi). 4an feed, 10an drain with a nice big drain flange that matches the exit port. I haven't had any coking or overheating of the turbo. If I was 20+ psi I might have some heat issues come up, but I would of bought a water cooled turbo.

6an in and 10an out for me but is supposed to be 4an haha

Before I enlarged my out to 10an I was running a diy 1.5mm restrictor and was good.
    Threaded and set screw insert.
Left one was too big, still got smoke but not with one on right.

I had two more before this, I went smaller with each one until no smoke because I didn’t want to accidentally starve it of oil

My next question of if it is journal, has been answered.

Just make sure to clock that/those seals properly during installation, as well as have the center cartridge as close to 12 o'clock in/out when mounted.

Some Garrett BB's required a restrictor. The BW EFR's do not.

It's a water cooled turbo also so it's been setup to 20°. This could possibly be a reason for things backing up. But I doubt it. The original owner never had a problem with it leaking. I'm wondering if the 3rz pumps more oil than the 2rz.
