I’m not a big 6.2 fan after having bought a few at work last fall. 2011’s and 2012’s with 90-100k. One puked an oil cooler sitting in the lot, one is arcing from the coils to the head (going to need new cool packs) which I think is causing a few weird PCM codes, and two have locked up fan clutches that have failed.

You wouldn’t want the 7.3 in a modern truck. Slow, loud, and leaky...it was way ahead of its time from 1994-2001 but once GM showed up with the common rail LB7 and the epa started to tighten emissions, the writing was on the wall.

I believe they redid the 6.2 sometime after that. I'd like to say after they pulled the plug on the 6.2 Raptor, we disused it earlier. Either way, those things aren't as severe as issues on diesels.

I kinda would like a 7.3 in a modern truck, with some tweaks. Despite all that.

Yeah, no way in hell I’d buy a gasser F250. Power sucks, mileage sucks and resale sucks.

I switch back and forth dailying my plat F150 ecoboost and a plat F250 6.7 that’s deleted and tuned. Even before it was tuned, it could easily get 17 hwy and around 15 mixed. Now it easily gets 20+ Hwy with no emissions BS.

I also love my ecoboost. Won’t ever go back to the 5.0 or even a 6.2.

Yep. I'm a diesel mechanic and I wouldn't own a diesel pickup truck. I have more coworkers who are former owners than current owners of diesel pickups. Some have even had five-figure repair bills. That shit will put you in the poor house even faster than owning a boat. Occasionally I'll run into an acquaintance who wonders why I don't have one. I just tell them I know too much...

Look at Mr.Moneybags over here :D That thing looks sick.

The way I see it, 12 city and 16 highway (Same as my Tacoma) would be offset by the price difference and increased MPG from a diesel. It's $1.00 a gallon more than regular.

I drive a 15’ F250 6.2L for work. Not a bad truck. I would be totally in for buying one as a ranch truck or business vehicle. I’ve had this same discussion on Tundras.com.

If I have seen 15 mpg on the highway, it was downhill with a tailwind, but we have craptastic gas on site, so take that with a bag of salt. Some of the other owners in this thread have more realistic numbers.

Someone looking for a gasoline HD truck for work/payload shouldn’t be as concerned with fuel economy as getting the job done safely.

Personally I have a diesel and have no plans of going gas. Now I also don’t daily drive my truck, and only comes out when one of these things happen:
    - Snow (I daily drive a RWD Lexus sports sedan).
    - Towing 16’ equipment hauler or 28’ lowboy.
    - Toy hauler.
Using a diesel for its intended purpose usually nets better reliability results.

The Cherokee? Thanks, it was $1700 :D lol. Luckily work pays for my gas so I can’t really talk about anything other than the cost to purchase. My F150 gets horrible gas mileage due to lift and tires, and the F250 has the same exact wheels and tires as my 150 and it gets like 4mpg better.

How many of those failures are from misuse and neglect/lack of maintenance from ignorant owners, though?

    A good portion.

I worked in a diesel shop as well, and a majority of the issues:
DD, partial upgrades, tuners, dumbfuck owners.

To each their own. I like my 7.3 and understand it for what it was in period but I would buy a CR truck all day before another heui truck.

    This.

2011+ diesels with SCR work reasonably well if you work them hard as intended. They have to stay hot or else you will have issues. Putting around town not under load will be problematic for the DPF and SCR

What do you mean I can't run this 150hp tune on factory head bolts?

You're supposed to change the fuel filters every 10,000 miles?

Modern synthetics are rated for 10,000 miles or more oil change intervals, right?

    What's an EGT?

Not to mention putting it through its paces to prevent the vanes in the variable geometry turbo from building carbon and sticking

    Yep.

I hardly ever recommend a diesel anymore. Most owners can’t afford to buy a daily driver and a diesel tow/work pig. Don’t blame them, trucks are so expensive. A friend sent me a pic of a 19’ TRD PRO Tacoma the other day with a price 500.00 less than I paid for my 3500HD diesel.

Does it have the 4.30 gears? If so, that would explain the mileage. I'm fine with above single digits city, and middle double digits highway as long as the truck gets me and my shit A-B.

I have an Audi A4 I use for commuting, though I do get me .50 cents a mile for a truck.

I'd be using it for my side business (Payload needed), toy hauling and whatever else.

No, it has the 3.73 axle gear ratio.

Oh, lol. I don't even want to know what it would get with the 4.30 and that craptastic gas :D

I’m really curious to see how the 2020 Super Duty does with the 7.3 gasser. It’s supposed to have a lot of hp and torque at low RPM and a close range 10 speed gear box to keep it in the ‘sweet spot’. On paper, it sounds good, we’ll see how it actually turns out.
The 6.2 was redone for the ‘17+ Super Duty. It’s quiet, smooth and pretty powerful. Plus, the truck went on a diet with the aluminum body and weighs at least a little less than the previous generation.

We have one at work, and can say it rides like a real truck and the thing is an absolute pig on gas (10-13). If you need the size go for it, they are work horses and have gobs of power. Believe the 2017s got a bump in power.
