On a related note, I bought one of the OGE battery hold downs (for a Northstar AGM, stock size, single battery). The hold down was too wide for the battery, so I ended up machining a spacer to take up the slack and then attached that with a couple of hex screws. Then the tie down holes were way too big (3/8 IIRC). I got some brass 3/8 x 1/4 bushings for those and then used some steel round bar to bend and thread custom tie downs. Made them a little long to eventually accommodate a different battery, so I topped them off with some acorn nuts (stainless). I'll take some finished install pics when I have a minute.



Areas for improvement --

1. Counter-bore the holes to the flanged bushings sit flush and loctite them in place.
2. Countersink the holes for the little hex screws.
3. Instead of holes in the OGE bracket, mill slots so the spacer has the ability to adapt to different battery sizes.
(Could have done this on the mill, but I was getting the truck ready for the dirt, and time...always time....was short).
4. Demo this on a drill press. I used my cheap little HF mill, which was accurate 'enough' to mill the spacer to dimensions and accurately drill the needed holes. I know a drill
press can do this job, and more people have one of those than a mill of any sort.

 

Pics? My stock battery is starting to slow down and I’m thinking about duals. But lately I’ve been leaning more towards a bigger single battery like a Northstar group 32 I think?

 

I took the 31 approach but the only accessory I run is a winch because I'm not EAF. Igloo cooler FTW.

@xxmagpulxx next time you do a new mod or need help with truck stuff, just remember while doing it that...

I ran a group 31 in the stock spot. Needed to extend the positive lead, modify the tray a little, and get longer J-hooks for the tie down.

It was a massive battery. I just didn’t want to wire in duals.

 

Yeah I have a winch but that’s about it. Not even a light bar or ditch light . I don’t think the duals would be worth it besides being able to self jump but I carry one of those little jump packs.

 

Check the charge on the jump pack. The cold weather killed mine.

I take it in and charge it every few months or so. It’s one of the lithium ones so it doesn’t seem to drain like the old heavy lead ones.

 

Yea “back in the day” hahah. I remember 92-93. That was a winter!

 

Mines the small lithium deal too...but I clearly didn't charge it often enough.

 

Yep that was my first winter up north. Good times!

 

I was a youngster but that winter was huge in eastern part of the state too. My dad thought about moving us to Spring Creek that winter. We drove over the summit from Elko, the snow was higher than the pickup roof. He turned around at the intersection at the bottom of the summit, headed back to BM and never thought about it again. Hahaha

 

Mine had no problem starting my Taco after sitting in sub freezing & sub zero temps for over 3 weeks (both Taco & jump pack).
It was at 96% & I had used it to jump start someone else about 3 months before. All from 1st charge.
Original battery from 2010 got drained because I didn't close the door all the way.

 

Bump. I'm tossing the tailgate cap and plastic tailgate skin this weekend if nobody wants them. @4Wheelin4Banger, you'd mentioned that you might be interested in some if this stuff but I don't remember what it was you were after...let me know if you still want any of it.

I also have an OEM receiver hitch I'd like to get out of the garage if anyone is interested in that.

 

I drained mine trying to jump a car that was having some issues staying running because I didn't want to hook my truck up to the tweeker's car but I needed him to move it out of the alley so I could get through...may have asked more out of the pack than it can deliver.

 

speaking of jumper packs, does anyone have the NOCO pack and if so, are you happy with it? I just picked one up and haven't had to use it yet, hopefully wont have to use it on my truck.

If this one, then yes. Used it to jump a dude at the airport in about 10* weather (had to use the boost for that one). then used it to jump a few of our cars at work that sat too long during the cold. Still says 3/4 battery.
