I think the weather guys hit the nail on the head with this one. They said at 6 am yesterday that the focus area was around highway 80 with a significant chance of strong tornadoes.

 

I wouldn't buy cheap Chinese shackles

 

I would, unless you're buying some super duty ones, all the basic shackles are the same.

All "basic" shackles are definitely not made the same.

"Ratings" don't mean shit if they aren't validated. We run in to this all the time in the aviation industry when we receive parts that are Chinese by mistake. We have to get them from a verified origin with all data sheets that are from legitimate tests from the manufacturer as well as a third party. If we can't get that information, those parts are as good as trash and put people at risk.

 

If you want to trust Chinese ratings and QC, that's on you. ARB and Crosby shackles are ~$15 each and 100% worth the minimal extra money when you consider the potential bodily harm of a cheap shackle exploding.

 

This is the area that Bart and I searched. If it has an X there is no structure left. If there is a circle, I can't comment because I don't recall or didn't see it.

 

I agree 100% quality metal makes huge differences.

However if you're yanking on a tacoma with a shackle I would think that a Chinese shackle will be just fine.

However a shackle isn't that expensive for quality anyways is it?

 

Having something properly tested to supply to the consumer market is expensive thus driving the price of said product up.

 

well ok, yes they have to be validated. that goes for any company you buy from.

but to say "this guy's 3/4" shackle rated for 4tons is worse than this guy's 3/4" shackle rated for 4tons" has 0 merit to it.

I studied mechanics of materials, materials & manufacturing processes, mechanics & designs of machine elements, and etc other mechanical engineering classes.

sorry if I'm not taking a geographers opinion as law on this, labeling something as "bad" simply because it was made in China is asinine.

yes, labeling it as bad if ratings aren't validated is completely reasonable. I'd PM the guy and ask him where they came from before purchasing.

no it's not, but I just offered the link in case somebody wanted some, since they're cheap because the guy bought them in bulk.

 

"china" doesn't answer who manufactured them, I'd simply ask for more information before bashing a chinese made product.

You don't need an engineering degree to know that Asian suppliers regularly lie about material specs. They even made their own grades so they can sell you an "equivalent" grade of what you want.
