Super excited - In a few weeks, my schedule will be changing, and I'll get out of work at noon on every other Friday, which gives me a chance to go riding after work!

Yea, the problem is once spring/summer start going, the afternoons will be a bit too hot to ride for me. I'll have to wait until the evening hours.

Unless I head out more towards the beach to ride... but that would mean my drive home would end up taking a couple of hours... but then I could wait out traffic with some food and beer out there... So many options!

Yeah, Utah summers make the fun places like Hurricane Area, Moab, and Grand Junction a no go unless you ride from like 6 to 8 am, siesta all day, then hit a 7-9pm ride.

My friends and I are gathering in SLC, Utah, in early July. We are really hoping to get some good riding in at MOAB, but we're also extremely concerned about the heat. Is it still possible to see enough of MOAB between 6-9am and 6-9pm, or should we make plans to ride elsewhere in Utah instead? What would you do about riding in UT if you only had the first week of July to work with?

That's pretty neat. Does your camper have a little garage space or what area does that go in?

Yes. It is a Winnebago Micro Mini 17BH. The bottom bunk flips up for bike storage.

It will be warm. I live about 80 miles from Moab. I go ride there in the summer in July. Like Gunshot-6A said, early morning and late evening. If that is the only time you have, just modify your ride schedule to fit. I take lights and we do night rides too.

That's a tough call. You could easily hit a lot of the shorter areas like Klondike and Ahab, but I think the Moab party piece "The Whole Enchilada" would be pretty frickin brutal in July. I rode it the 1st weekend in May, and it was almost 100 degrees on the lower 3rd by the time we got down. If you caught the earliest shuttle they have, you could prob do it and be ok. I think I had the 10 or 11 shuttle. All depends on your tolerance for heat as well. Utah is way hotter than NC in the summer, and the dry environment sucks all the moisture out of your body, unlike NC where you can't get rid of the wet.

There are some good spots around town in SLC like "Bobsled", as well as Park City is pretty temperate in the summer but doesn't offer the level of riding as Moab. The Wasatch Crest should be G2G when you are in town though. Some good stuff just over the border in Idaho and up near Jackson Hole. About the same drive as going to Moab, JH is about an hour farther.

If you wanna ride more locally around SLC, PM me and I'd be glad to play tour guide over a weekend or after work.

Good info, guys. Thank you! I think we will probably need to enlist the help of a paid guide to ensure we don't die of heat stroke after getting lost at 9am...lol

yea, I live in LA, I won't pretend our summers are as hot as yours. I live more inland, which is hotter than the beach areas. I don't have much tolerance for heat, riding anything above 85° is generally too hot for me, so I usually have to ride at like 7 am to beat the heat in the summers.

The Trailforks app is your friend. Embrace it's knowledge. Not saying it would substitute a guide, but can keep you from getting lost. There are a few trails around here that it saves me on pretty regularly.

Big Cottonwood is money for that. So much great backcountry at your fingertips. Just need a splitty or skis, avy gear, and friends (and some knowledge).

Yeah, F- that noise. Moab in July is brutal, spring and fall man. Even early/late hours can be hot as hell. Don't think it cools off before 9 PM, or stays cool after 7AM. Basically, if the sun's up, it's freakin hot. Lots and lots of people get serious heatstroke, as there's NO respite from the sun and heat.
**Except in the LeSals, where is beautiful in the summer.
Otherwise, I'd be up in the mountains. Gunshot's right. SLC has some goods, as does PC (which includes Deer Valley). Head north to Jackson and Targhee, they are super fun.
Not sure where you're coming from, but there's lots of options up north in Idaho(Sawtooths), or south in New Mexico (Angel Fire), or central in Colorado (Summit). Basically, follow the Rockies.

Yeah, just another cash outlay/gear setup. Only downside of backcountry I see is that you might get 1 or 2 runs in for BC when you can get a bunch in on an inbounds resort in the same amount of time without the need for avy gear or needing a buddy to take utilize that avy gear.
