People usually do recovery shackles in red or another bright color. Gives a good contrast to the black bumper they're usually installed on. FWIW I don't think you did anything wrong and hey, it's y'all's truck so have fun with it. You're probably the only one on Earth with it painted that way, so you'll always know which taco is yours!

I actually did pull someone out using my safety chain holder holes
It was either use them or leave the guy stuck on the side of the road
It was a very narrow one way road, definitely no way for me to turn my truck around
we used both sides and hoped for the best and it worked out, one time deal
Also in the PNW

 

Those are nothing but a place to hook your safety chain when towing.
