I want to install an electronic locking diff on my 97, can I pull one off of a newer first gen or are there aftermarket options available?

Aftermarket options are things like an ARB Pneumatic air locker, or something like a Detroit TrueTrac.

They’re both expensive since you need to get them installed by a gear shop. I wouldn’t even try to attempt something like that.

Your option for adding a stock e-locker means you need an entire TRD axle. The pumpkin sizes were different as well as the bolt pattern.

I found a totaled 2003 with a locking diff. Would an axle swap between the two be a fairly simple job? Anything else I would have to replace in the process or just a plug and play situation?

Yes swapping the axles is the best way. I recommend running an aftermarket harness since it’s eadier to hook up.

@Falkor1 Your post is really helpful thanks for sharing. Hopefully I can find an axle with the locker.
