Well I can tell ya what I do, and what 99 percent of shops and dealers do, y’all might not like it.

I bought the tool and it works great. I drain the oil from the pan, reinstall the bolt. Then move the drain pan under the filter housing. Use the tool and crack the main housing free. Don’t even bother using the bottom drain with the stick in plug, waste of time and pain in the Ass.

So spin the main house free with the tool just enough so oil starts to slowly seep over that o ring. Grab a Walmart bag, slip over canister and spin it free. Let it drop, the canister, filter and little oil that the filter holds.

Throw filter away, clean off old oil in the housing, parts cleaner is fine. Wipe it out good and clean and install new filter and oring. Install filter and housing and fill with oil .

No mess, no bs messing with that stupid bottom drain. It’s a royal pain to get that lower one loose without spinning the main canister free. For those who are worried I know of a 2011 t4r that has 300k on it and the lower drain has the same oring...

Pretty sure the 3rd gen tacos use the same tool as the t4r. Haven’t changed the oil in my 3rd gen yet but almost positive it’s the same plastic housing size just slightly different filters.

I’m new to these & come from Miatas & Scions.

What’s I’m loving is that parts for these are SO cheap & plentiful in comparison.
I need a new grill- $100, inc. grill, clips, & corner light housings.
My carpet looks dingy & needs a good cleaning. A full replacement- $150.
That is a fraction of what I’m used to seeing.

64mm Toyota oil filter cap. Was 10 bucks prime. No need to for the 20-40 dollar ones.

When did they change the 4.0 oil filters? My 06 T4R had the same as 2nd gen taco. Nice and neat right on top with a little drain hole you stick an empty water bottle under. Seriously the easiest oil change ever. Shame they changed it from best to worst... I'm glad my wife's Forester has a similar design.

2010 I think when they did the update. Not 100 percent sure but that sticks in my mind. I agree though the 2nd gen is the easiest oil change on any vehicle of all time.

Understandable. I've always gone to them ever since moving here in 2014 without any issues, with the only one being the leaky CV seal after they replaced the axle. They fixed it no questions asked.
And after all the work recently that has gotten done (plus the insane amount if money I have given them), they blow up my phone regularly to make sure the latest experience was a good one (giggity).

    I’ll ask again:
Anyone happen to have a set of 5-lug rims sitting around I can buy?
I need some! The crappy tires on my 14x5 steelies are spinning in 2nd gear (2.4L) & good tires aren’t available for 14” ....
    I can’t afford $400-500 for aftermarket 16x7/7.5 I want right now

I would at least look at them and if they are worn replace. I run regular copper plugs in mine (which was factory) and they are start showing wear at 30k which I replace them anyways because they are cheap. Iridium and Platinum tipped ones 100k+ usually

Yeah you are probably good till what your dealer said then. Still wouldn't hurt to take one or 2 out and check condition.

This talk reminds me now that I have a oil catch can I need to seafoam my intake and clean the TB really good.
