Mud causing paint damage?

I got myself into a bit of mud this afternoon but when I took my taco to the car wash I noticed that there were places where it appeared that the mud had damaged the paint. It almost looked as if something had etched it where the mud sat. I know it wasn't a clay residue because it wouldn't scrub off. I wound up having to use a polish to get the spots out and I have one area where the polish isn't working.

Anyone else have this problem?

 

Ive heard of that happening. I guess the mud can be slightly acidic? I don't know.

My truck has stains on the roof from the acid rain while it sat on the dealer's lot. I tried clay bar, polish, wax, but nothing can take it off.

 

I don't think we have any acid rain out where I hunt - rural western OK.

 

i belive it is just taking off the wax.... unless you let it sit there caked on for a few days in the heat.....
but i am no expert....but i have had a muddy ass truck alot.......and no problems

I have no idea what it ultimately was but a Porter-Cable R.O. polisher and some 3M finesse-it 2, Finishing Material - "Machine Polish" took the spots right out. You'd never know that they had been there at all.

Just for grins, I had a local body shop give me a quote to polish the out for me. Turns out that the polisher wasn't much more than the quote so I just bought one. Now I can keep the truck looking good myself.

Depending on what type of soil it is, the mud probably has very tiny abrasive elements in it.
