Ok folks, some of you have been lucky to purchase a TRD Pro at MSRP. Sometimes even below.

Have any of you had any luck with buying one in California? Worried if I buy out of state that I will have problems getting it registered in California.

I talked to my Fleet Sales/Internet Sales guy today - and said at his dealership, they will most likely upcharge the TRD Pros.

Thanks for any intel you can provide.

You shouldn't have any problems registering in CA. Just pay the sales tax......

My neighbor bought a Raptor in Michigan and drove it home. He said it was a major pain in the a$$ to register it in California. I was just basing my idea on his experience.

Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa told me they sell them at sticker. They have the best prices on Tacoma’s in the state. Depending on where your coming from they have a small airport near by they can even pick you up from.

Call the fleet / internet manager

In CA, while you'll be buying out of state, the Registration paid at the out-of-state dealer will be based on your CA address. Some think they'll pay lower reg fees for buying out of state; Nope, and the CA DMV will confirm. As for sales tax, you may pay less going out of state and your purchase price may be less too; there's the potential advantage. That said, if you spend the money on gas which eats up any savings, it's a wash. As for registering in CA, you should have no issue. My sister works for the DMV and she says they do it all the time.

Awesome info - I will try my luck with Santa Rosa. I used to have a good connection at Elway Toyota in Ontario. A decades worth of business. When the TRD Pro came out - I ordered it. Was all excited when it arrived. Went in to pay for it, got the $5000 up charge surprise. The TRD Pros are a good idea for people like me who want a few factory installed off road goodies without throwing away a perfectly good set of rims, shocks, lights etc etc.

When I bought my truck I specifically asked about the pros and he told me that people from so-cal fly in all the time to buy a pro and drive back. Hopefully he was telling the truth.

He told me I wouldn’t find my truck for cheaper in CA and he was right.

Yup, you think this forsaken state will let you get off that easy!? Lol

I remember there’s a guy on here that bought his pro in Montana and drove it back home to Cali. Not sure if he had a Montana address to register and avoid Ca fees tho

No issues registering from out of state.
    You will need to:
    1: get it smogged
2: pay sales tax when you register it at the local DMV

if its new, no smog most of the time....new law in ca allows for a certain period of time before you have to smog...if you sell car and have had a smog within 90 days, or have the smog cert, you don't need to do it

You can avoid the upcharge by traveling out of state. While you are out, find somewhere else to live... That's what I did lol

I bought mine new from Findlay Toyota in Vegas a few months ago and drove it home to CA. I had to have it smogged and also inspected at the DMV (I think they just checked that the VIN matched everywhere). I didn’t pay any sales tax at the dealer, and paid full CA sales tax and reg fees at the DMV here. So, based on my experience, you shouldn’t have any issues registering it here. If you get it from a dealer in a state close by they may be very used to this, and know exactly what to do. Findlay seems to do this often and they work with a company here to help get everything done.

Just bought my trd OR in Utah and I drove it back to California. Once the wheels hit California, I think you have like 20 days to register it. The dealership will send the paper work to your choosing of dmv. So if the paper work takes longer than 20 days, just say the truck just arrived into California a few days before you went into dmv. You’ll pay ca sales tax at the dmv (be prepared for this because I paid the sales tax out of pocket but I took loan out for the truck). That was easily $3k of sales tax with registration fees. You’ll also have to weigh your truck and smog it. I got mine weighed at a lumber yard, and the weigh station must be approved by dmv.

If you’re moving to CA from another state and your vehicle is less than a year old, you will be required to pay an additional sales tax to CA. It happened to me when I moved from TX.

Easy to do if you are active duty military. Otherwise, no.
