What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

There was a lot of dried Pryor and BigHorn mud on the floor of my garage the last time I swapped one. Does tht count?

I think if you had a front locker (and used it) you would not be so cavalier about which axles you are willing to trust.

 

I looked for a bolt but didn't see one, thought they were spot welded to the inner fender or something. I'll have to take a close look I guess.

 

I've removed em from two tacos now. They're just well hidden

They ate studs welded to the bracket. Only nuts hold them on you'll see them sort of under the air box ish and battery. You can still get to them though with an extension

 

By oem junkyard axles for $50. Rebooting is a good learning experience to understand how the axle is put together.

 

How was the install for the cb below the radio? I just bought that same cb and plan to install in the same place once I get rid of my stock double din radio

 

I've been looking at doing the same thing, but with a 2m/440 HAM radio. It looks pretty straightforward, as there is TONS of space behind the radio.

My plan is to simply make a spacer if needed, between the radio and the stereo (a couple of wood shims or paint stirrers are handy for this), and then duct tape the two together (as the bracket is usually bolted into whatever goes below it, but there are no provisions for that on the CB or HAM radio. It is redneck, yes, but you'll never see it, it will be solid, and it will last.

Put my CB in the ashtray spot, too. I used tiewraps there, after cutting out the back of the bracket for the ashtray with a Dremel. Same deal- redneck, solid, can't see it. "Work real good, last long time"

 

Redneck is my middle name lol ... I've had my dash apart before but haven't pulled the radio out yet. Not too worried about it, just curious since the other guy has the exact cb I just bought. Would it hurt anything if the radio and the cb were touching each other? I'm afraid my OCD wouldn't like any kind of a visible gap between the radios on the front.

I started to get the smaller cb and put in the ashtray but I preferred one I could change the color on to match my dash lights and also wanted one with weather channels. I've looked into HAM a little bit but still don't know enough about it to even consider it yet.

 

No, won't hurt a thing. Both chassis are grounded. If anything it would be a help. Besides, it's a dual-DIN space, and both units are DIN, so it's pretty much made for it.

PL259 (coax connector), but that should be the worst of it.

 

Thanks, I hit the salvage yard pretty regular in warmer weather. I might grab one just for backup. Most vehicles, even in the scrap yard have less mileage than a 1st gen, since they last forever!

Finally got around to doing my oil pump and seal. Got all the phillips head screws out without stripping any of them

Tonight, if it's not raining, I plan to tint my windows. Give them another good scrub with a razor blade and glass cleaner to make sure they are nice and clean, and then squeegee the new tint on.

Actually, bought the set that has the rear windows in my extracab as 50% VLT, and one for the front driver and passenger front at 35%. Given that the hard part is done and they are all pretty much flat slabs of glass, it should go quite quickly.

EDIT: stand corrected. It was three kits to get what I wanted- back window and X-cab windows at 5%, not 50. Just trying to keep the nosy out of my business.

DO NOT buy their install tool kit. The same kit can be had at Oreilly for $13.

 

Most ham radio have a removable face plate for better placement so you can put the main radio body under the seat or similar. Works very nice. That's prime switch real estate

 

As a HAM for 20 years, that isn't accurate.

Many do. Not most. But yes, it is a desirable feature.

 

Very common for most dual band radios these days I'd say.

 

Perhaps the market has changed since I last looked. Got any recommendations, say around $200? 2m/440 at a minimum.....
