I got rear ended in my highlander by a teenager texting. I was dead stopped at a light and he plowed into me at about 40 straight into the beavertail hitch. Hit me so hard the visors flew down, the radio screen flipped open and the rear view mirror nearly came off. The curt hitch receiver braced the frame and there was minimal damage to me ($3k mostly cosmetic). He totaled his brand new Dodge Dart. Texting is crazy. Everyone on my highway commute to work is on their phones. It is just understood you will be rear ended eventually.

Edit: oh and the moon roof visor closed. So much force. His hood was over the windshield, both airbags deployed. He was bleeding and crying. I didn’t have a scratch. Luckily a cop was right there and calmed him down.

It’s so dangerous. Teenage girl hit me going 65 to 70 and I was complete stop waiting to turn in driveway towing my popup camper. Didn’t even hit the breaks. No skid marks at all. Might as well drive with her eyes closed! She totaled the camper as well. Wife and daughter would’ve been completely fuct if not for camper taking most of the force. She is so fortunate I was not in my dump truck which I drive everyday or she would have been dead.

I don't understand why people would want to repair a badly damaged vehicle. I got into an accident with the first new car that I'd ever owned, and the damage was just on the edge of being totaled. Being a clueless kid I didn't fight with the insurance company to total it, so it was repaired. What a mistake. The car was never the same.

Glad you’re ok, and you know who hit you. Someone ran a red light a couple of weeks ago and totaled our Accord. After the smoke from the air bags cleared I got out to check things out and the dude gone...Hit and Run...

Airbags are something like 12k-15k to replace. That alone wont total it. Your truck probably needs 25k worth of damage to be totaled. Might be, but I am not so sure.

    KBB worth..

Mileage, year, airbag deployment, damage repair $ amount, shop time & rental car timeframe.. all factors come into play.. my Wrangler when an idiot pulled in front of me didn’t total my ride.. the wait time on the grill with the car rental determined the classification of being totaled.

Air bags and frame damage are expensive items. When airbags go off the damage a bunch of other things as well. Lots of things need replacement. Factor the time into it all for the repair to be done and how long you will be in a rental.... yeah usually those are indications that an insurance company may total the vehicle. Doesn’t always mean this is the case, but if a frame is bad enough and all the airbags went off, especially the curtain airbags more than likely they will total it out.

Thank you every one for the advice and concerns.

So yeah I am waiting to hear from my insurance company hopefully tomorrow but I doubt it will happen that fast. I believe I had 6 air bags go off. All 4 curtain sides went off and the steering wheel and I am pretty sure the knee air bag went off too.

Once they had them pulled apart I could barely see the front bumper support. I should be able to see the truck tomorrow in day light. I’ll update with some pictures.

It's not just air bags anymore. ADAS system has been compromised and that is expensive job to get correct and a huge liability if done wrong. Pretty confident that is totaled. Glad you were able to walk away.

Glad you are ok for the most part. That doesnt look to bad, just the major airbag deployment. They may fix that.... any word from insurance yet?
