Im hoping to grab a set of flares from craigslist.. But like most things.. Its not done until its done.. Lets say the deal does go thru. The flares are Barcelona red.. and my truck is black.. Can I just scuff em up and paint them matte black? I mean I realize I can but whats gonna be my issues with durability? I have seen the bed-liner stuff and that just has too much texture for my liking.. Im not sure if there is anyone local that could wrap them with vinyl. Plus Im not sure how durable that would be either... Im trying to look at all the options here and see what you guys have done.

Craigslist deal fell thru.. Goin with blue ones now

Plastidip is an option, You can always touch it up if it is scratched or peeling

Ive thought about plastidip.. Heard a guy on here say his wasnt very durable so I got a little skiddish to that idea.. I wonder if I just put down several coats if it would last better.

I did the grille on my old Dakota in Plastidip. I put on 5 coats and it held up really well. Temperature and distance from part has a lot to do with how it lays down. Keep the can in a bucket of hot water between coats and you will be happy with the results. There is also a clear you go over it with if you are concerned about durability.

Why not make it look beefier with raptor spray.

Honestly, you'd probably be better off doing a one for one trade. Plenty of people would love to get rid of their black flares.

Neither Painting or plasti dipping will last without a proper layer of protection. You have to clear coat over matte black and over plasti dip to get a finish that last.

That along with good prep work will give you nice long lasting finish.

If I clear over the matte. It might look like I tried to match the factory paint and failed(since it would be shiny) and I dont want it to look like that..

Totally different texture than bedliner that has chipped rubber in it, plus it has UV protectant built in.

If you apply it by hand (like with a small roller) you can control the amount of texture too.

And it will be more durable than any dip, wrap or common paint that you can use.

i plastidipped my rear bumper 3 years ago.... still holding up amazing... also had my grill plastidipped but ended up switching to the rattle can bed liner from autozone on that. it all comes down to your prep work. clean it VERY well, use a degreaser then alcohol. do quite a few thin coats, let it completely dry in between coats. i didnt do a clear coat so i could keep the matte black finish. you will be fine with plastidip. and if you end up not liking it later, its too easy to pressure wash it off, or just peel it off

I'm betting you could take them down to black in an afternoon of wet sanding. At least if you paint black over black, it won't show light damage from rocks etc.

yeah, i cant give advice when it comes to automatic washes, i always washed mine by hand and without a pressure washer. but after 3 years and quite a few times washing it after many offroad trips i had 0 issues
