Consumer Reports seems to have a pretty good dataset on this stuff, and the colorado gets 1 star out of 5 for the last 2 years, while the Taco gets 3 for last year and 2 for the previous year.

I don't trust their conclusions though. They recommend the Ridgeline for 2019 as being 29 points ahead of the Taco. :der: Not for me, thanks.

I looked at the Colorado also, drove three of them. IMO the Tacoma was a far better truck when comparing the same features to price and factoring in the huge difference in resale (reliability) it was a clear choice for me.

One of the things I do when comparing vehicles is also look at the lease option and then look at the residual value at lease end. That speaks volumes about the value of the deal. Tacoma was better price and worth more over time hands down. Shop around you'll more and likely find 3 year used Tacoma's selling for near what they purchased at, not true for the Colorado.

I think resale value is maybe a better metric. Regardless of how much taco or Colorado owners complain (and in all honesty I think taco owners win in that category), how much it's worth after 10 years is more meaningful to me.

When shopping for my 2017 I compared the cost of similar used tacos and Colorados. I found that a Colorado generally sold for $8-10,000 less. True, I wasn't always comparing perfectly comparable vehicles, but it was clear the Tacoma holds value better.

On the way home this evening a pulled up next to a fully tricked out ZR2. No thanks. It just doesn’t do it for me.

So Ford and Chevy are off the list. They were never really on.

I just took their "number of reviews" they claim they have processed through their site (210,000 of them since the year 2000) and did the math.

Drive an an old S-10 and then an old Tacoma. There is no competition between the two trucks then or now. Chevy is simply shit.

Yeh, I'm not a Honda El Camino fan either. Consumer Reports requires a membership to get in deep. So I don't use them anymore. At one time they were considered biased, but now that they charge the online subscription for revenue, maybe they have gotten better.

Buy new on tacomas, resale value is too high to get a decent deal (with the rare exception of finding a deal with a private seller). Resale value is estimated at ~85% after 4 years (not included taxes, registration, etc.)

Interesting. I don't see that. I have the Firefox nightly build, Ublock Origin, NoScript, Privacy Badger, and HTTPS Everywhere running. Turned those all off and still don't see that number. Firefox has been trying real hard to beef up the security in their browser.

Oooohhhh, you said S-10. I think that is a four letter word. I wouldn't even put the old S-10 in the same category as the newer Colorado. As far as the Chevy is simply shit, over on the Colorado forums they're saying the same thing about Toyota.

My parents subscribe, so I flip through the magazines when I visit. I trust their raw numbers, but I've concluded their recommendations are based on completely different priorities than my own. They seem to be excited about whizbang features, while I just want something reliable and easy to use. That said, I don't always understand the logic in their ratings. In the last magazine I looked at, in every single reliability category the F-150 was having issues - but in the overall reliability, it had the top rating. What gives? I dunno.

(-: Resale value is the problem. It's hard to find one just a few years old that isn't only a few thousand under the price of a new one. For those of us that keep our trucks till they drop, that hurts. For those that trade them in every 2-10 years or maybe more, it's great. If my 2001 didn't have the frame rust issue, would I trade it in? Hell no. I'd drive it another 200K. Smart thing to do might be to trade it in though, if it wasn't rusted.

It does make me think of a valid point. The 2019 Colorados shouldn't be selling for the same price as the 2019 Tacomas when the depreciate faster. Something to think about.

I'm sure they are right and Chevy has totally done a 180 in the last few years and Toyota has just said "fuck it". Makes sense.

Yeah I almost bought a new mustang 5.0 for around the same price as my 2018 TRD sport, but decided not to because the depreciation was going to be crazy high the first 2 years. Then traded my 2018 sport for my pro for what I paid for it

I understand your point. Trying to buy a slightly used Tacoma is not easy. I just like to look at the overall value in anything I purchase. IMO it's really expensive when it's not worth anything soon after you buy it.
