FOUND this very helpful. We are all over the world on this forum and live in different altitudes. Never new that could have an effect. Ugh still 91 or 87 will be a debate forever until someone does some Tacoma dyno’s. Doesn’t anybody own a shop to compare a Tacoma with 91 then with 87. Anyway,, enjoy

What is your question? There is no debate really, the energy potential in a gallon of 87 octane gas is the same energy potential as in a gallon of 93 octane gas, as long as the amount of ethanol is the same.

What changes is your vehicle's timing because of the knock sensor. Use a higher octane gas, timing changes a bit and that will get you a few more horsepower.

    That's it.

No debate? Must be your first time here to tacoma world. WELCOME! New member. There is hundreds of pages from drivers, technicians, mechanics and engineers all over this place that have exact opposite opinions and stats about 87 vs higher and mpg and hp differences. I’m just joining in.

This open ended statment doesn’t help either

( Research octane number 91) that’s a fucking rabbit hole if I ever saw one

Um, not really. There are a lot of opinions, myths, legends, etc but the facts speak for themselves.
Look up energy of a gallon of gasoline. Octane does not matter since it does not add or subtract any energy. So, what changes? Engine timing retards because of knock sensor, that gives you a bit (maybe 10 hp) more horsepower, end of story. Seriously. Anything else is just bullshitting around and killing time.
You can go down rabbit holes easy.

RON is a European standard, nothing else. They are showing you the conversion to US spec. 87=91.

Well then. That fills in that rabbit hole quite nicely.

Wonder if the OP has ever read the gas pump?
If he does, he will see an equation: (R+M)/2
That equation simply states our octane rating is derived by adding the RON and the MON standard and deviding bu two.
    No mystery, no rabbit hole.

After reading OV tunes blogs, I have ran 91 octane for 2 months. I have definitely seen an improvement in smoothness and MPG.

I got a tank average of 20MPG for the first time (Manual Transmission) last month.

Why doesn’t the book just say 87 why does it mention or suggest 91 research?

It tells you the octane rating required as determined by US standards and the also gives you the same octane requirement as determined by the majority of the rest of the world’s standard. It can’t get much simpler than that.

It says both because the Tacoma is sold where RON spec fuel is used also. No difference between the tank capacity being shown in gallons and liters.
