So despite all of the complaints I bought a 2019 two weeks ago. I test drove it on a flat highway and didn't feel what people were talking about so I figured maybe you can't please everyone. Then I drove it to work which consists of driving on a highway that's at least 70% hills. That's when it hit me, people were right! I find S mode helps a little, but is my truck too new for the update?

There is nothing wrong with the truck. That is how it was designed to work. I love nine, zero complaints

Whether there IS or IS NOT an update for it, it's not going to drastically change the way your transmission performs.

The TSB fix seems to get mixed reviews. What it is not going to do is add 50 HP and downshift less. Give it some time. Learn how it shifts under normal circumstances and alter your driving habits to make it perform closer to your expectation.

I've been driving in S-mode for most trips lately. IMO, the truck likes to shift around 2k RPM in D. You can take it to 2500 and manually shift it, and it will drive like a different truck. That will be more effective than any TSB fix. I find that I will keep it in S4 and only go higher. I let the truck shift how it wants from 1 to 4, but I decide when to go into overdrive (5 and 6). Truck shifts great from 1 to 4. But it shifts from 4-5 too early, and 5-6 too early.

Once you're in 6 and approaching a hill, back off the throttle a tick and downshift to 5. The truck won't shift hard from 6-5 or 6-4 because it's not downshifting on the incline, rather doing it before when it's easier to make the gear change.

EDIT: Didn't realize you had the 4-cyl. I don't drive one so my comments should probably be disregarded.

    Too few to list.
This. Toyota doesn't give love to the 4 cyl. At least the 4 cyl 4x4 AT has 4.30 to assist in acceleration.

One thing I’ve noticed with mine (v6) is that if I push the accelerator on the bottom like I always have it drives like a dog. But if I move my foot up and use the top of the pedal it drives normal, is actually responsive and shifts down on hills like it should. I don’t know if I’ve been driving wrong for the past 20 years or what.

Got a question for the Tacoma veterans out there. I recently bought a new 2019 Tacoma TRD off-road with the manual trans. So Far I really like it, the only thing is I can’t seem to figure out the transmission. I have driven sticks my whole life and can usually get a good feel for them within the first week, this one for some reason is throwing me for a loop. Sometimes the shifts normally and smoothly other times it jolts or seems rough. Now I know there is definitely a break in period and I only have about 2500 miles on it but my question for you guys is do you have any tips on how you drive your 3rd gen sticks. Like how high or low do you engage the clutch where your RPMs are at or even how fast you let up the clutch or slowly any tips you can give me,will most likely help if I can get this down it’s a perfect truck in my eyes. Thank you all.

@bulalo beat me to it, with the thread he posted. There are a few other threads on here addressing some of the manual "issues". This one is just under 500 pages, but covers alot.

Did they bring MT back in 2019 offroad model? I thought the 3rd gen only had MT in the Sport model.

I’m not completely sure. All I know is I went to my dealership and asked to test drive a MT Tacoma they said they had none is stock but one was being built and would be there next week when I got there it was the off road with an MT. This is my first Tacoma so I am a newbie but the salesman’s said the off road MT 4 door was somewhat hard to find. Not sure if that’s true or sales mumbo jumbo.

Every M/T vehicle I've driven shifts smoother if you don't fully press the clutch to the floor, including my new Tacoma. Find that sweet spot.

I felt the same way about the 3rd gen M/T when mine was completely stock, it was the only M/T vehicle that I couldn't get used to within a short time period. Looking back, it was likely because the combination of the clutch accumulator and factory ECM calibration made the whole experience inconsistent.
Now that the accumulator is in the garbage and I'm tuned, it's all back to muscle memory and I don't have to wrestle with this thing to drive normally (smooth). No clanks/bangs/rough engagement. Smooth power, even below 2K RPM. That's just my story, take it or leave it. For those guys who are running their M/T trucks completely stock with no complaints - I'm not calling you a liar or "looking down" on you. The guy I quoted says he doesn't like some things about HIS truck so I offered my experience. Keep you panties on.

I appreciate the input and I don’t mind doing some modifications Toyota can’t get it right all the time only question I have is looks like a pretty easy but is this something I have to reverse if I ever need to use the warranty?

On the contrary, it seems they gave ALL the love to the ‘17 I4 4x4 5spd.

It’s like they stood back and said “there...THIS one is DONE.”

And then they stopped making them lol
