    I have a 2013 with 305k+ miles (4x4 DCLB)
    noticed a howl/whine at 60mph (also there at 50 & 70, but most notable at 60mph)
when I let off throttle & when I set cruise control to 60mph

I have noticed this noise for the last 5-10k miles
but may have been there for many miles prior & I just didnt hear it
as this howl is very faint & only at 50-70mph, most noticable at 60mph

seems to be coming from rear end
did a fair share of research/reading on this....
most point to rear pinion bearing wear

I did remove the entire carrier assembly 5k miles ago
took it to a driveline shop
shop stated there was nothing wrong with carrier assembly/3rd member
all the teeth on pinion, ring, & spider gears looked great
I did find metal flakes in the bottom of the diff housing while I had the 3rd member removed
I am assuming these flakes are from the roller bearing(s) that are part of the pinion bearing that are failing/deteriorating

Ive driven it 5k miles since I had the 3rd member/carrier assembly examined
& the noise is still roughly the same (volume wise)

my big question for TW peeps.....if a pinion bearing is early in failure, would a bench test of the 3rd member reveal this? or is it only diagnosable while driving?
how long can you drive with a bad pinion bearing?
when do you know you have gone to far with a bad pinion bearing?

wondering how long I can keep driving with this noise before a major failure?
debating whether to order a replacement 3rd member from ECGS?
they want $725 (with my core) + I pay shipping one way (to return my 3rd)
    mines is 3.73 non locker
local shop wanted $500 to overhaul
Id opt to spend the extra money & go ECGS

what to do? what to do?

Have you checked the wheel bearing to rule them out? It does sound like a pinion bearing from your description. Theres no way off telling how long it will last. It could fail in a matter of seconds or in a week or months. I would plan on calling up ecgs and getting one on the way if you can afford it.

how long did you run the from the factory rear diff oil? Im gonna bet you ran it for quite some time, or have gone long intervals between changes. If so, pinion bearings are gone, and have likely ate your ring and pinion.

@glorifiedwelder sells a whole rear axle w 3.73 with awesome factory LSD for much less. Maybe he would ship you the 3rd in a bucket?

Could save you a lot of money and you upgrade to mechanical LSD

Are you positive that the rear (one or both) wheel bearings are not bad?

I have 222K miles and just after the frame replacement (last summer) both the front and rear bearings have had to be replaced. I had my truck inspected by a private shop prior to the Dealer frame replacement and identified the front bearings (actually only one side) was visibly loose. But i had both replaced. About a month or so after the frame replacement (and slight lift of the front end with my new coil/struts) the rear end started to "howell" the faster I drive. I didn't "feel" any significant vibration, but definitely could hear something.... and in fact it was the rear bearings... both are now replaced (stupid expensive!) My dealer did the job for me (since the rears are a pressed off/ on part and need the Special Service Tool to do it....) and now all sounds great!

Your description [noticed a howl/whine at 60mph (also there at 50 & 70, but most notable at 60mph) when I let off throttle & when I set cruise control to 60mph] seems/ sounds to me just like what I was experiencing....

Can you see any evidence of a seal failure on the back side of the wheel housing, looking from under the truck, looking at the back side of the wheel housing?
I could on mine, on one side... slight evidence of oil leaking... had stained the back side of that housing...

A loud noise " howl" from the rear axle under decel "slowing down " is indicative of a worn pinion bearing or crush sleeve . A howling sound under acceleration is from worn out or improper preload of the pinion and ring gear

A simple test you can do to check your pinion bearing preload or crush sleeve

Pull rear drive shaft off at rear axle

Next with a large ratchet , extension and socket that fits the large nut holding the pinion yoke attempt to see if it's loose . If it is the crush sleeve on the pinion gear is worn

    indeed you are correct
I ran the factory rear end gear oil for 90k miles like an idiot!
then I started synth gear oil every 15k after reaching 90k miles & have done so up to 305k miles

although if you read my initial post in this thread, I did remove the 3rd member, & have it examined by a drive line shop
all the teeth looked fine (ring, pinion & spider teeth all good)

Yeah im still betting pinion bearings, you might of gotten lucky and caught it early before causing too much damage to both of em. If you are in there replacing pinion bearings, replace carrier as well.

    no leaks on mine buddy...
I replaced all 4 wheel bearings anyways since hearing the noise, but it persist...so its not wheel bearings
    thanks for your input bud

I replaced both rear wheel bearing for $400 total
(the toyo bearings were $100 each on Amazon & local shop charged me $80 per side to press out bearings)
I removed & reinstalled the rear wheel drive splines myself to save $
minor PITA, but a great learning experience on the construction of the rear end & how to work on antique drum brake systems, lol

thanks for this, but along with this article, Ive read every article available online regarding 'howling'
Im pretty sure its my one of the pinion bearings or the preload on the pinion itself
going to pull the trigger on ECGS rebuilt unit, unless someone provides different input on the matter here at TW
hopefully a rebuilt 3rd fixes this annoying & possibly dangerous howl/whine...I like wine but not whine hahahhaha

I have a 14 with 40K miles and had replaced the original fluid at roughly 1K with Mobile 1. I had the truck regard at the 40K and ZUK who did the gears showed me that my pinion bearing had some abnormal wear. Its possible its bad, and not your fault for running so long with that oil.
