No shit Sherlock. That’s why it was suggested as the other option to the vehicle running until it was shut off by the driver. Obviously not letting it continue to run is a safety issue that could easily result in injuries and death.

Maybe you need to read (or think) before typing.

I've used the key in the fob to lock the drivers door while running. I think the trick here is to make sure all the other doors are locked first

Not exactly correct. There are several keyless start systems on other vehicle brands that DO NOT shut the engine down when opening the door after remote starting. From my recollection, Toyota is the only one that has this flawed engineering incorporated into their vehicles. Most require the fob to be present when applying the brake and shifting out of part when/if the car was started via remote. It just cheap and old tech from Toyota... nothing more, nothing less. The “remote start guys” (aftermarket manufacturers) make remote start units for several different makes/models, and those don’t shut down the engine with a door opening... it’s a Toyota thing, not the “remote start guys” issue.

It's absolutely ridiculous that I have to use the KEY to lock the truck while it's running; I should be able to get out, shut the door, hit the lock button on the goddamn fob and have the doors actually lock. It's stupid coding/software decisions at Toyota, it's not the only thing they've programmed stupidly. 4H Locker only, terrible stock tunes (which they've mostly fixed now but come on, vehicles have been properly tuned from the factory for 30+ years now), stupid conditions for certain modes / etc

Really? Push start was the main reason I looked at the Sport... Otherwise I would of been happy w/ a SR5.

It happened to me today. Went to get my windows tinted. They called me to tell me my truck was done. They handed me my Key Fob. Go outside, my truck is running without the key fob.

I was like “ WTF?” I thought this truck was supposed to shut off if the key fob wasn’t near the truck? I thought the window tinters broke my truck or something lol

I was tripping out on my way home.

Yep you can drive as far as you want after it has been started.

Just dont run back in to grab something, forget your smart key, and drive to the gas station and shut it off just to realize after you have to walk home now... and you miss your movie.

Kids weren't happy about missing the new avengers movie when I did this in my old optima.

It's a huge issue to have the truck shut off when it loses the key detection. I can't believe more people don't get this.

Not me man. I have the lexus key card and don't even carry any keys anymore. Even my house has remote access. It's nice.

You can just get a remote start and your engine will die when the door is opened but because the remote start operates by pressing lock 3 times in the OEM fob, your are inherently locked. With smart phone control module that you can add on to it, again your engine will die when the door is opened...but here you don’t need the FOB to unlock the doors if you left the FOB inside; or for a spouse headed to the vehicle without a FOB (remember it’s locked) so only way to unlock it is through your FOB unlock button, touching the handle when the FOB is on you, or via smart phone APP -only after a remote start. And because the engine dies when you open the door, if you unlock it with the phone app, FOB, or smart handle touch, you’ll know that you forgot your FOB because again, the engine turns off. Pretty failsafe for this very scenario the OP posted about and won’t have to worry about someone driving off if say you started with the FOB and walked away with doors unlocked, and they will be unlocked until a set time after you shift out of park and drive off IF you have that setting enabled.

I was able to start my prius withOUT the battery in the fob (battery died and was too lazy to replace battery for fob for like 2 months) I would just wave the fob next to the push start button and worked every time, I would imagine it would work the same for the tacoma

Also I always kept the little metal key inside the fob separate from the fob so it works without that as well

You don't drive without a Forward Operating Base?

Oh, a key fob. It's just a fob. Not a FOB. It's not an abbreviation.

    I know, I know!
The RFID in the key has nothing to do with the battery in your remote. The RFID communicates with the ECU's Eeprom on the truck, which has a predetermined program once the key is read.

I do apologize for my auto correct sir, but let's not divert or hi-jack the OP's thread with grammar corrections. I think we all understood what was said regardless. I'll try to make sure my phone doesn't do this next time...but in all honesty, didn't care and neither has anyone else ever have.

Ya, but if you left your Taco warming up, you'd be worse off. If a thief steals your Taco, he now has your Taco & your key!

Having a car starter is the best way, because as soon as the door opens, the engine shuts down, so thieves cant drive away with your Taco.
