Did you go with the 5.29? What size wheels/tires you running and do you have armor or other weight? Im going to stick with the Ecgs recommendation of the 5.29 even tho I'm on 33s now until they wear out.I .can see myself going up next time but he said even at 33s with the additional weight I'll be happier than with the 4.88.I also like that op had the 5.29 with factory wheels for quite some time and enjoyed the benefits even then.

I’m running 285/75R16. Icon suspension, sliders, SSO Bumper, 10k winch, and I’ve got a DCLB.

I haven’t attempted any Grapevine runs yet but, we’re in close proximity to each other. I have to drive through the Newhall Pass back and forth every day for work down to Burbank. That drive already had me irritated as all hell on stock suspension. I’m halfway done with my LT setup and I’m at a point of slitting my wrists now on stock gears.

I’ll be calling EGCS and I have a feeling that they’re going to recommend 5.29s like they did to @Mack411.

    Anyone running 5.29’s with 285/75/17 ? I’m leaning towards that over 4.88’s since it’s a 34ish tire

How do you like the 4.88s? If you could do it over would you go with 5.29s?

You just may have convinced me to go with 5.29s... I have been loosing my mind as most shops said 33" tires and 5.29s is an overkill even though tacoma is runnig a lift, steel bumpers, winch, skids, sliders and sizable 500 lbs camper... I figured all that weight surely can use easier gear but maybe 4.88s is better for longer drives since the rpms would be slightly lower but than seemed like you still managed to get 18+ out of yours somehow

Same here I've talked to Sean at Rogue in NV and was told there is an electrical issue of some sort where it cuts off at around 85-86mpg, gears can go faster but the computer says no. Very strange!

I don’t think you will be disappointed especially if you offroad a lot. Go for it!

As far as the speed, the gears will let you go above 85, not that you ever really need to, but I’ve tested it after some reports here on stock tires and it’s fine.

The biggest hit to mpg is local city driving, however it’s perfectly fine on the highway.

I got the 5.29s. I love em so far. My MPG has so far been 1mpg better, but the acceleration and cruising on the highway between 65-75 has been so much easier and effortless.

So confusing seeing 488 v 529 AT v MT. Seems as though 529 suits AT and 488 for MT. Any MT’s running 5.29?

Yes because the ratios in the trans are different.

I meant I don’t know who is running 529 on a AT and who is running 529 on MT. If their sig or info on left doesn’t specify what tranny they have. Wish there was a poll at the top.

The 4 banger AT must be wayyy more gutless than the 6cyl AT. With 255/70R17, aka 32”, the 4-banger can’t hold 6th gear at 75mph, constantly downshifting and holding 5th at ~2400rpm. Add any grade, going into 4th, ouch.

I have no choice but to go 5.29 if I want to hold 6th at 75mph. Starting to wonder if even 5.29 is enough.

What is the next gear ratio after 5.29?

I haven’t seen anything lower than 5.29 offered for yota axles. I think you would have to axle swap. I’ve seen Currie make Dana 70 up to 5.38. At that point I wonder if it would be easier to throw in a second transfer case and run 2 low. Haha.

I’m having 5.29 installed on at 3rd gen 4x4 off road this week. Running 33” tires with some armor. Will see how that goes.

the old Toyota 8” axles had up to 5.71 gear ratio. The tacom/t100 8” rear with the bracing I believe only goes up to 5.29. If you have the the new 8.75” rear (only comes with manual trans, or e-locker rear) 5.29 is far as it goes for now. I think it would be hard pressed to see 5.71 for the 3rd gen tears until years down the road when guys start rock crawling these with big enough tires to need 5.71
