Maybe they’ll have a sale on a winch and I can get one. Those smittybilt tents look tempting too...

I was told by a few people here it’s not worth it unless you really use them. I have a ground tent I haven’t used yet but if I could get one of those for a steal why not...

Pros and cons to every setup.

If your planning on leaving it on and using it every weekend it’s worth it. Last summer sucked as I didn’t take the usual trips. Was left on for only a few trips.

On the flip, setting up camp is a breeze. Your bedding and shit is stored ready to go, so “saves” room in the bed of the truck.

Depending on how you mount it can lead to a world of shit which will lead you to spend money uncontrollably till you get the title full retard and you slightly hate yourself.

    Don't lie Peter

You're considering getting rid of it lol

That article that was posted by yuiry on Ontario Overland brought a very good point up coming from someone who's used both. On long trips etc.

You're getting out to relax and unwind.
    Not feel rushed and stressed.

If you're feeling rushed or stressed to take the 10min to set up a crappy ground tent which lets be real here is only crappy tents that take long . Good tents set up fast .I can have my hammock up in 3 minutes or a ground tent up with sleeping bag and pad inflated in 5-7min.

Having a tent like that gazelle or oz tent are likely the best to be honest . Being able to stand etc inside your tent is worth as lot . Crawling around in a RTT is no different than crawling in a ground tent.

    Nothing will be perfect.

But taking a RTT on and off if it's your daily driver is a bitch . And the fuel killing would be brutal to always deal with . Even for long trips
Eugene spent 2k on fuel for his trip . Imagine with the wind resistance of a rtt? Fuck the aerodynamics of a bed rack being above the roof line made me lose 3L/100km driving back from ny

There's some spots where RTT is good but not many . And I don't think any of us are in those situations where it's needed over a ground tent.

what brand RTT is everyone using? or what brand to they recommend? Im like 80% sure i want one, I like the idea of being off the ground. that smittybilt is tempting but i haven't looked into them yet since my trip west is in June and other things a little higher on the priority list.

    Peter has the ARB .

And if you do it right and bounce around like he did you might split your bed instead lol.

I don't think they belong in hard use . Only touring

I bought a Smittybilt last summer and I leave it on my truck all times, other than the winter. I used it almost every weekend that I could, just to get away from living in a city.

I think before I were to buy one I’d actually want to be able to climb inside one and check it out.

Amy and I are going to rough it out this summer but I can’t see why it would be a bad idea to get one in the future for say the Dempster or Labrador or something.

I bought the normal sized one, plenty of room for the gf and I. May also end up buying the annex once I see it go on sale.

I’ll post up the thread here.

Would include a ARB tent that has three trips on it (got it warrantied last year near the fall)

    Has two annexes.

    Don’t know pricing yet.
