Well, my dealer had their top tech drive the truck with me --- a 2017 Limited. When we finally experienced the noise, he began with, "well, this is a 4 cylinder. All 4 cylinders have this problem". I said no, it is a 6, so he switched to "all trucks do this". I said no, I drive an F150 and a Chevy Silverado at work. So he said "oh, those are American trucks, all Japanese trucks do this". I said that why would the highest selling truck have this issue? He went silent and continued driving to the dealer ship, got off, opened the hood, counted the cylinders, and then approached the service adviser and mumbled something that sounded like "it's the transaxle". They kept the truck for the day, supposedly did tests with corporate and sent them the results, returned my truck, and said they would call me when they had a solution.

Bout to drive to AZ to get it done. Our dealers down here... god bless them.

Didn’t notice post above me. Had to be Miami lol. Same dealer that told me my lift is the reason for transmission. Said there is a TSB and they said they wouldn’t even bother and I’d have to pay. Took everything in me to be nice and respectful.

I had my ECU update 200 miles ago. It made a big difference. The engine seems more awake and more willing to accelerate on demand. Even the ECT power mode feels faster.
It feels nearly as powerful as the wife's Dodge Grand Caravan! Sad isn't it.
Unfortunately today heading on a slight gradual incline with a headwind at 45 mph hour I feel the truck shuddering again. Like 6th gear doesn't have the power and i doesn't know to downshift.
I was hoping that would be gone. Oh well. Still a much better driving experience. Hopefully it doesn't revert to it's old ways as many have reported.

I know I’m Debbie downer, but in my experience the shuddering comes back. I’m trying a tank of 93 to see if that makes any difference. The 40-50 shuddering is the only boogeyman I’m still trying to chase.

I have an update for all who drive a 2017, 18 or 19 year Tacoma's. TSB 0077-16 will not be installed on your vehicle if your experiencing any of the four issues by your dealership, unless you get lucky and find someone who doesn't care about their job with Toyota. I've owned my 2019 Offroad now for 2.5 months and am having the delayed upshift and gear hunting problems as described in Rev 1 of SB0077-16. Even have video of it to show the service manager. I now have a case file opened at Toyota because my local dealer tells me unless Toyota issues a bulletin specific to my year they cant do the reflash. What the manager told me is they don't have enough complaints opened at Toyota in TX in order to address this with the engineering group. SO MY PLEA TO YOU ALL IS IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE YEARS VEHICLES CALL
800-331-4331 AND REQUEST TO OPEN A CASE FILE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. This way they look into it and revise the TSB to include 2016 and on Tacoma's.
My next step in this process, and that's what it is, a process is I pleaded basically with the service manager to do something to try and fix it. So he agreed to do a transmission flush and reservice tomorrow at no charge ( granted i only have 5700 miles on it right now) and I asked to get the calibration ID I have on this truck to use that as ammo against Toyota. And for my own knowledge.
This is a rally cry to all 3rd gen owners to bombard Toyota with complaints about this transmission, or any other problem you have for that matter, to force them to address the shitty shifting problem like they did with just the 2016's. Attached is the cover letter of the TSB if your not familiar with it. At my next opportunity I'll scan and attach the whole thing if anyone needs it.

Mi Toyota- you need to take a trip to another dealer that’s not a bunch of tight wads. My dealer didn’t even drive the truck (probably because this is a constant issue). I told them what it was doing and that I wanted the TSB and they did it.

Would they do the TSB software for free or you have to pay a fee? I have a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

i had both tsb's done for free, no questions asked, under warrenty, and it a software update, improvements to the software, im sure the dealer gets software updates for there PC's and virus protection programs, an update is an update, they have to perform it.

Does it matter if you didn’t buy the truck from Toyota ? Can I still get it done without a fee?

I have a 2019 w/ the busy shift tranny problem. Fox Toyota said unless it throws a code, there is nothing they can do about it. It does it between 40-50 mph, searching between 5th and 6th gears. Pissed!

I’m bringing my 2017 TRD Sport in tomorrow here in Dallas. Same things you are all describing. Mine only has 1700 miles on it. We’ll see what they do.

I’m hopeful. Can’t see why there would be a “shift feeling enhancement” bulletin. That is some proof they’re admitting to an issue. Mine has almost no drivability. I turn a corner or try and pass someone and it just doesn’t downshift unless I floor it. Then it upshifts rapidly into the highest possible gear.

Same man , but maybe you should go to your Toyota dealer and tell them about your problem. I went and they said that is normal for Toyota’s

So as expected they were assholes. Supervisor drove with me and drew a definitive line in the sand even before we did our test drive. At one point during our 1/2 mile around the block waist of time he said "you need to drive it more aggressively". We literally argued in the truck the entire drive all the way up to the point where I told him to get out.

The service rep was standing outside the drivers window listening to us both go back and forth. She walks away and comes back with a number on a post it and says "call this number and make a case, they'll help" So i did. Had a very long talk with Toyota HQ. Their exact words, take it to another dealer. If they do the same test drive and send you away we'll get involved. They called the first dealer I was at the they said I was never there. Top notch service there.

Anyway, ill keep you all posted. Toyota HQ was very helpful. Have an appointment with another dealer in the morning. They're who I bought the truck from. They said "no test drive, just leave it here". So far so good.

I too, have talked to corporate. They won’t do anything about it unless I can recreate it. The stumble, hunting for gears.

That makes no sense. Some say the dealer does it no problem. Issue gone. Then I hear this. Just doesn’t add up.

The guy I spoke to at corporate told me that he wouldn’t close out my case until I am satisfied. I’m not going to keep it if they don’t address it.
