That's understating it. I use one of those cheapo pumps for the tcase and front diff and it still takes a while. Drop the spare, and the rear diff is easy to fill.

My experience OP. First, find a coupon code for advance auto, buy online and pickup. I bought 6 qts of m1 and did front, rear, and tcase, fluid cost $50. Choose what you want I also bought washers, dealer or Amazon. Pump not needed for rear, but a short piece of hose attached to the tapered nozzle helps. Dont lose the hose! Others have already chimed in on procedure.

For future notes, i did use a pump on the tcase, took forever for one qt-ish. Front diff i ran a hose down the engine bay and poured in a funnel. My only note on synthetic/conventional. I use synthetic in almost everything. I have noticed anything bad, and truthfully havent noticed anything better, use whichever. I use synthetic for temp ratings, but you'll be fine either way.

I like this but not enough capacity. I would like it to hold 4 quarts. Rear diff holds 3 quarts, so you will have to open the fluild pump 2 times which would be annoying and causing potential spillage/mess. Also would like to use this for the transmission to, 1.2L is just not enough.

Easiest way to refill the rear differential is from up above; not down below. Same for transmission fluid. Different size hose for transmission than differential.

A length of 7/8" ID heater hose with a plastic hose barb splicer(Home depot/Lowes) secured by a hose clamp. This end goes into the fill hole on differential. A piece of string/rope/whatever can be used to secure it in place - wrapping string/rope around hose - then tie to any spot near-by. Keeps hose connected to fill hole.
A funnel is inserted into the hose top-side. Pull back just a hair on the funnel to create a vent. Have all bottles of gear oil ready to go. Pour gear oil into funnel. Done in a blink.

Ok so I ordered the gasket set someone posted on Amazon. Front rear and tcase. Do they all take the same fluid. Or is the transfer different?

Rear diff, front diff, t-case and manual trans all call for 75w90 gear oil. Difference is that the manual trans takes the GL4 variety and the diffs and tcase take GL5.

Just did my rear differential ('13 4.0L extended cab 4WD AT) at 48,000 miles for the first time and noticed that I drained less than 3 quarts (~2.9) and was able to add about 3.3 quarts. Anyone else notice this apparent volume discrepancy between the specified volume of 3.12 quarts and what I drained and refilled? I even had the truck on a slight downward angle to the rear due to the slope of my driveway and the height of the ramps I used. Thanks.

Looking at fluids at Walmart yesterday. None said anything about any additive. What should I be looking for?

Honestly I was there in search of some power steering fluid. That's a whole nother thread. Had a stiff spot in my steering. The whole ATF PSF thing is even more confusing. Just ordered the gear oil pump off Walmart.com for $5... Store pickup at the same store that didn't have one on the shelf??? Says they have them in stock.

Spray the u joint on the steering shaft with some PB blaster. Right where the shaft enters into the steering rack. I'd bet you a beer that fixes the stiff spot.

Randy, you nailed it. I took it to the carwash and got the underbody washed and then loaded up the joint with pb and it's cleared up. Going to grease it tomorrow. Was also a bit shy of the cold low level on the ps fluid. After reading a lot of nonsense I decided to just buy valvaline atf for Dex and said f it we will see.

The pb is a bit of a band aid and only prolongs the life a bit, but it’s a good trouble shooting tool. The intermediate shaft should eventually be replaced but at least now you know what it is!

Oh is that what it is? It's going bad? Just assumed it was gunked up from the salt.
