Modified exhaust.. yes or no?

For the longest time modifying the exhaust on my 2nd gen wasn't appealing in the slightest, but for some odd reason it now sounds like something I might be open to. What are Tacomaworld's thoughts.. yes or no?

Totally your decision if you want to or not but just keep in mind that all a new exhaust will do is increase noise and will do little to nothing for horsepower and torque. That being said I went with a flow master 40 a number of years ago and besides the droning, I love it (just did a hack job and cut the old muffler off and clamped the new one in).

I do wish we could make our Tacoma’s sound like V8’s but that’s a engine swap dream for the future.

 

I modified mine....but kept it stock right up to the axle. Does that count?

Save your money for gas/food/beer instead

 

Define modified.

You can cut off the tip and do an axle dump for free.

You can do headers back for several hundred

Or you can swap out random parts in between.

What's your goal for the modification and what is your budget?

Will you be adding boost?

L4 or v6?

 

Just the muffler. No goals other than a little growl, but it seems like the consensus is it’s probably not worth it (money and v6).

 

OP, have you heard in person our V6's with an aftermarket muffler? It's a V6, so it's going to sound like the lowered Subarus and Hondas out there with big wings and mega camber. That may be your thing, but it's going to sound like a chainsaw.

 

I have the old branded version of the exhaust you mentioned cut off before the rear axle and I like the sound of it. Thing is sound is very subjective so I just say look up more youtube clips and then make a decision.

Ya, would be nice to hear in person. Seems like everyone that has this muffler likes it. Is it not too noticeably loud at idle and low rpm’s? What about drone at highway/interstate speeds?

 

I’ve had three different exhausts within 25k miles. I’ve sold all 3 of them and went back to stock. The noise wasn’t worth it to me.

 

I have a dumped magnaflow. I like it. Not that loud. Doesn't do much else.

My buddy says my truck sounds like a rav4 with the muffler cut off. Makes me laugh every time.

 

My stock muffler started rusting from the inside out. Swapped in a flowmaster Delta 50 series stainless. A little noise, no drone and won't rust. I don't need anything else. Perfect for me.

I'm dumped after the axle as well.

Hell yeah, delete the cats, go with some LT headers, ypipe, and a nice catback..

IMO, you can make a v6 sound good, just takes a lot more work. If you dont like loud, then you can always add a resonator to your setup to quiet things down.

I agree with most that a V6 can never be made to sound good. The quieter the better. I have a flowmaster with a glass pack before it. Pretty quiet, but looking for a stock type replacement that will last.

 

This, I could live with on street or trail without annoying drone-one of the better ones I have heard....

 

So due to the dump before the rear axle my setup is a bit noisier than normal and the drone at highway speeds is a bit much. For that I'd reccommend against dumping before the axle. At idle and low rpms it's not bad at all.

 

I just had my muffler replaced with a Flowmaster 50 series delta flow. It’s not much louder than stock with a nice rumble. Sounds great up to about 3k then road and engine noise drown it out. I might cut out the unmonitored cats to make it a bit louder later on

 

192 raging ponies at the rear wheels just doesn't make for much of a statement. Road noise contributes to driver fatigue on longer trips as well. Save your money.
