rear leaf spring broken

My tacoma trd 2006 have rode 120,000 miles. During the past two weeks i was hearing a noise seems like a hard metal hitting under the cargo area. Today i took it to a mechanic and found that the rear leaf spring of the driver side was broken. I made a lot of calls and the leaf is sold in full sets (left side set and right side set), not individually. Each set cost between $500 to $600. I want to know if my truck qualifies in the tsb 0305-08, i brought it on december 2009 with 90,000 miles.

TSB's only apply within warranty. A few exceptions have been made, but that's rare and strictly the dealer's call.

 

Your better off going with after market leafs springs

 

You can buy a single leaf at an autoparts store and have in installed in the OEM pack. This is your cheapest option if that is the route you seek.

 

^^^ or a spring shop can make you a replacement one.

Just curious.. how do you drive you truck? Just wondering what type of conditions would have caused it to crack..

 

I'd go after market or a spring shop. I had the springs on my 69 GMC rearched a few years back for like $90 and it made a huge difference and was much cheaper than buying new ones and they have held up great.

 

Keep in mind, one new leaf will cause. A partial lift where installed. It will be stronger on that side and not ride the same. Replace both sets and be done with it, or keep replacing them as you go.

 

I usually drive on asphalt roads, and the loads doesn't excede the weight stablished in the owner manual. I think that this leaf was cracked before I buy the Tacoma, and the crack was hiden because it was separated in the place where the leaf was atached to the truck's rear axe. But such is live, I took off both sets of leafs ( left and Right) and went to a Spring Repair Shop at Bayamon, PR, today, where it be install a pair of leafs in each set to convert the 3 leaf into 4 leafs. the job cost $290.50 for both sets

 

I have the same problem. 2005 Tacoma Double cab with 115,000 on it. The rear left leaf spring is broken. I was just searching for a leaf pack. Is this a common problem? i also only drive it on the road.

 

Only if you bought the toyota certified platinum (not gold) warranty. I dont know what the max amount of miles it can have on to be certified, however.

 

Typically the leafs will sag if simply overloaded. The culprit is likely material defect (e.g. embrittlement during heat treat), pre-existing notch damage, corrosion or a combination of the three. Under the previous owner, has the truck always been in PR?

 

So many people on here take off their stock leafs that I would buy a used pair from somebody on here and save a lot of cash. Post up a want to buy in the classifieds. They're pretty easy to install so you can save money there by doing it yourself with a jack, friend and a ratchet set.

 

Within a year of purchasing my Tacoma I complained that the truck would bottom out with a very light load. They apparently checked it over and said there was nothing wrong. I never carry anything heavy in the truck and only drive on roads.
Recently I returned from vacation and could hear a metal on metal noise coming from the rear. Upon inspection I noticed the center leaf on the right side was completly broken and hanging loose. The center leaf on the left side was also broken but still in position.
I have had a few light truck in the past and hold on to them for at least 10 years. Never a broken spring.
I returned to the dealer and was told that because I was over the 30k miles the repair was not covered even tho I complained well before the 30k period. They said I would have to take the complaint to Toyota, but in their experience as they had seen this many times before and said Toyota would not offer any compensation.
I had OEM springs installed at the dealer at a total cost of $600. I thought they would have waived at least part of the cost/labour but no such luck.

My dealer refused to do the TSB even with proof. Ehh, in retrospect I'm glad I went with new leaf packs instead of starting a big fight over it. Better quality with my Dakar's and it won't sag again like the AAL's tend to do.

 

The three leaf packs on my old 95 Tacoma broke on both sides. A local spring company made me new 4 leaf packs and they were fine and never had a problem.

It has been so long ago I forget the cost of the leaf packs. But, at the time
I was living in Florida and it only cost $50 for them to ship them to me. Just
call them and get a quote.

I've got 50,000km on my 08 Taco, and i only pull the occasional toy (sand rail and boat) and i keep a canopy on it. I am the original owner and my springs were completely sagged out (not broken). IMO the stock springs are complete JUNK! and you are far better to go with an aftermarket set. it's more money but in the long run worth it. This ways it's an excuse to get a lift opens the doors for bigger tires, etc...
