    Hello All,

I recently got a Tacoma from a friend and It would not start... I have fixed that problem but the more pressing problem is that it dose not want to stay running. I have to hit the gas to keep it running and even then it runs very poor. I have attached a video to show you the issue I am having. In the video it starts fine but it revs high then wants to die with out hitting the gas. when i give it gas it will be delayed in response. the end of the video I do not hit the gas and as you can see the engine shakes pretty bad. I have ruled out MAF. Any ideas.

No CEL? Idle is controlled by the ECU. Check the vacuum lines and PCV on rear of valve cover.

Yes there is a CEL but I can not get either of my code readers to link. It always says linking error.

I get that once in a while. Try connecting it first before turning the ignition to on or turn to on and quickly connect the reader.

    Welcome to TW.
I agree with DriverSound seems like a vacuum leak.
What was the no start issue?
    Those codes would help.

I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty sure it's a leak that's why the engine is revving higher to compensate for the extra air it's getting. Check the intake manifold for cracks and make sure you didn't break the little resistors in the MAF.

Checked the MAF sensor looks good. No breaks in the resistor

Usually with issues like this, I'd take out the throttle body and give it a good cleaning. How is that looking just from peeking in?

No start seemed to be the immobilizer.... but I could be wrong. When I first got it, it would not turn over or even make the starter start. On and off 5 times seemed to clear that problem. Then it started and it will die within about 1 sec if my foot is not on the gas.

A mechanics stethescope with the probe removed works great for listening for vacuum leaks. Another way is stick a small hose in your ear and move the other end of the hose around the engine to listen for the hissing sound of a vacuum leak.

Actually I should have asked this first, was there ever an aftermarket alarm?

I agree... if I had the codes I would know where to look. But neither of the scan tools will establish a link.
