New OR vs used SR5

Did they give you a good deal? Has the truck lived its life in Nebraska? Would like to know how the frame looks on it if you happened to crawl under it. I'm looking at a 2015 TRD Off Road with low mileage down in Lincoln.

I ended up not buying the SR5 because it was only 2WD. No wonder the price was good. Don’t know how I missed that in the online description...otherwise it would have been a good possibility.

It came down to new Sport vs OR. I drove both, MT and Auto, and I was just about to go for the Sport Auto, when a more loaded OR MT came up on the inventory with some fairly deep discounts.

I think they gave me a good deal on the 2019 OR MT, about $3K off MSRP. It has the tech and premium packages. No stereo upgrade unfortunately, but heated seats and leather. Also got the bed extender.

I gotta say it’s an awesome looking truck inside and out. I am pleasantly surprised by the tech and amenities so far. With the heated seats it warms up the cockpit quickly, very important this time of year.

Because of all the snow around the dealership it took them 30” to dig the car out to bring it for me to test drive LOL.

It has 41 miles on the odo right now. My initial impressions are very good. Pretty quiet on the road for a truck. Fairly soft suspension that soaks up potholes and road seams. A little bouncy, not too firm with the cornering, but then it’s a truck, not a sports car. I find the power and acceleration to be pretty much what I expected. Not a race car, but with a little flogging can move with authority. My previous DD was a 150-HP Fiat 500L, so this is an upgrade. The shifts are very smooth too, on a par with my MX5.

My initial impression is that the stereo doesn’t suck. I listened to Los Lobos on the way home, appropriate for driving a Taco, and the sound separation was good, bass presence respectable and trebles clean. I am pretty bullish on my sound systems, but for a truck I think this will do fine.

Anyway happy customer so far.

Do a search on here for the $250 stereo upgrade, it's a nice improvement over stock.

 

Yeah maybe it could have—they had to move some snow to get into it, then move a couple of other vehicles out of the way. :-/

If I could do it over and was in your situation I’d probably get the SR5 and add lockers. I never use the crawl control but always use my lockers. I just don’t care for the 60k miles too much (personal preference) but I know in a toyota it’s still very young.

I will say it was easier for me to pay a few bucks more a month than it would be to dish out a couple thousand at once for lockers/lift/etc.

I think deep down we all know what we want and or what we would be happy with. Just be honest with your self and know that either way these trucks are awesome in an SR5 or TRD-OR.

If you have the tech / premium, you've got the highest "stereo trim" offered on the OR. The sport and limited have one higher "stereo trim", I believe. It's still decent though.

 

The only higher Factory stereo trim is the JBL, but no Manuals of any Tacoma models come with it.

 

Yeah I hate to say it's exactly what I wanted, but yes, it's exactly what I wanted. I've been blessed over 40 years to have owned virtually every car I have ever really wanted to own (within reason, no Porsche Carreras or Shelby Cobras on the list yet...).

I will live with the stereo awhile before I upgrade. It's not too bad. My prior '18 WRX had a lousy base stereo, but had been upgraded by the dealer with an awesome JL system--used a special processor for OEM integration. TBH I don't even know how many watts it was. 400? 1000? I do know I couldn't turn the volume past 30% without suffering major hearing loss. Anyway, that's a thought if I want to go that route. The local car audio supplier Stereo West Autotoys has excellent products.
