Makes sense to a point. But bit lazy too. There are way to make the buds stronger to a point they would at least last a bit longer before damaging the frame

 

I don't know where the main failure points were on yours Mike, but one would think that some reinforcement to the belly skid wouldn't hurt at least. At least that would be where I would suspect them to bend very easily when I was installing them on my 1st gen.

 

Bell pan and tranny skid cave very easily.

Lots gusset them. Well...people who know they bend do.

 

Actually. it is the IFS skid that has deformed the most. Repeated impacts have made it almost impossible to mount. The belly pan skid is a bit deformed but not near as much as the IFS.

 

What he's saying is correct, over-building one component just pushes the failure mechanism somewhere else. However, there are ways of adding a "fuse" to the system to make sure it fails predictably. For a skid plate, using 3/8" Grade 5 fasteners instead of 1/2" Grade 8 likely means that the bolts will shear and the thing will fall off before doing any real frame damage.

My understanding is that the BB skids are heavy as hell, do you really want to add more weight to them? I bet you've gotten your $300 worth out of those things a couple of times over. Is there any way we can move mounting holes/brackets around so they line up a little better and you can get some more life out of them?

 

This is maybe something we can talk about this weekend.

Im still tempted to get the aluminum ones for Igor. Never do anything THAT hard anyways in Igor.

Weighs like 3x as much as the aluminum ones. The full set of aluminum weighs I think less than the stock skids.

The weight savings are what's tempting. You of all people should know it sucks getting the rig fat haha

My SS skid is fine for what I do, and it has a couple major pings in it from me hitting stuff. Idk how the aluminum would fair long term. Bud Built claims aluminum does fine with direct impacts but not good with being drug around. Not sure how much merit that has.

Either way, I've almost bought them a few times. Price tag is just hard to swallow.
