Please Help me diagnose this sound - Bearing noise?

2008 Toyota Tacoma. Noise seems to be coming from engine around the fan area. It gets slower and faster at times, but also seems to affected by a/c unit being turned off and on. Sounds like my car is rattling apart!

That’s pretty bad, could it be an exhaust leak?

 

Does the sound change with engine RPM? Vary the throttle position and let's hear that effect.

Check the ac clutch pully and make sure its not wobbling around

 

It changes with engine speed. Exhaust leak or loose spark plug would be my first suspects.

 

sounds like a belt/pulley or fan is rattling very suspect that its going with engine throttle.

 

Sounds like the fan is hitting something inside the shroud. Have you visually inspected the fan?

 

I should note that diagnosing noises over the internet is next to impossible. If I could lay hands on that truck, I'd probably find the issue in a couple of minutes. Here I'm just offering educated guesses and areas to investigate.

New video is much better, doesn't sound like an exhaust leak now. I'd suggest taking the belt off and then starting it. If the noise goes away then you know it's a pulley and with the belt off (and the truck) you can check each pulley for play.

Anything caught in the fan, baseball card, stick?

 

Pretty loud for an exhaust leak but that's what I'd check first. Possible that your fan is hitting something. Maybe lifter issue. But damn that sounds like a main bearing - hope not.

Did you check your fan clutch? It could be bad.

 

This is on my 2017 tacoma sport. It’s got 64,000 miles. Surely the fan clutch wouldn’t be wore out yet. But I guess anything’s possible, I’ll check that tomorrow. It almost sounds like it’s coming from the alternator though?
